Unitiqute stopping during UPnP playback

Posted by: Hindsight on 10 November 2014

In the last few weeks my Unitiqute has developed a habit of stopping UPnP playback in the middle of songs for no apparent reason.  I have had the unitiqute for nearly two years and not experienced this issue before.  The issue appears to occur randomly, sometimes after only a few minutes of listening and sometimes after over an hour and on different tracks/points in track/albums.

I recently switched to the most recent version of the naim control app, but the problem began whilst using the previous Naim control app version.  After the music stops, “Stopped” appears on the unitiqute display.  You can restart the music from the start of the track by pressing play on the remote.  Has anyone else had this issue or worked out how to fix it?

I wonder if it is to do with my ethernet connection in the house (using powerline connectors), my NAS drive (Western Digital MyBook) or my network router (Virgin superhub)  but this setup has not changed for months and everything was working fine until recently.

Any ideas/tips/solutions would be much appreciated.

You mention the powerline units. One thing that can happen with these is changes in the local environment - new appliances, a move of an item onto another circuit etc can cause problems - particularly if the units have poor signal strength to start with and you have a fair few wall wart supplies dotted around the house. Can you do any network quality checks with your particular units ?

One other thing is the Superhub is best used in Modem only mode with a separate router -  https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...-connectivity-issues

Are you wired or wirelessay connected? I have no choice at the moment to use my NDX wirelessly and recently I too have had "stopped" during UPnP. Only at certain times of the day though, and last night I tracked the problem down to my daughter streaming Prison Break on Netflix next door. Seems it's too much for my wireless router and it prioritises her not me.

I've solved the problem by putting a CD on...for a peaceful life!

Thanks James,

No new appliances fitted, but I could try replacing the powerline units.  I've read about the superhub issues but it was all fine until recently...

I'm currently using a wired connection through the home electricity cables.

It could be any of the devices in the chain.  I know that for many, powerline connectors are not totally stable (but for some they are).  I'm not sure whether, when they are not stable, this is the result however.

Ok -

I'd go this way of trouble shooting the issue and increasing reliability.

1 - Put a temporary hardwired connection between the UQ and Router to see if the Powerline network is the issue. If it is consider replacing or using wired Ethernet.

2 - If that's not the issue and you want to keep the Superhub, consider investing in a small 5 port network switch - A GS105 from Netgear will do. Connect one port to the Superhub (to give you a wireless connection and an internet connection). One port to the NAS and one port to your Powerline adapter.

3 - Use the setup in step 2, put the Superhub into modem only mode and use a separate wireless router and attach the switch to that instead of the Superhub.

Thanks James, I really appreciate your assistance.

I'll give this a go. the unitiquite and router are about 20 metres apart, so I'll need a long cable run, but it makes sense to test a clean wired connection.

Out of interest for option 2/3: I'm already using a network switch.  There are approx 4 ports on the router so currently I have the NAS drive and powerline start point going directly into the router and am using the switch for other appliances and wired ethernet runs to other rooms.  My logic was that to get the best possible connection between NAS and the unitiqute, so thought it best to cut out the network switch altogether.  Do you agree or is there a better way to config?

I'd do it the other way round with the NAS and Powerline adapter on the switch and the other wired devices on the router but at least check out the hard wired route first. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

A big +1 for that

You have to go through a switch, a direct connection will not work. A reversed CAT5 cable may work, but best to go through a switch.
