Adding Synology Nas
Posted by: Dozey on 10 November 2014
Hi - I am trying to add a nas to my network. It (DTC) is asking me what the path is. Anybody know how to find this out? Thanks!
The NAS needs to have SMB turned on (Usually on be default)
If so it will automatically be seen by hdx/serve
Otherwise you need to establish the IP address of the NAS which you can do via its web interface or usually there is a little companion 'discovery' app for the nas.
Thanks Gary. Unfortunately I don't know how or where to turn on "SMB". I do know the IP address, but if I put that in the path it doesn't help. When the dct doesn't connect it provides a window with a space for IP address, but you can't enter anything at that point.
IME its best to go back to simple basics -
Set NDS, NAS & wireless router to DHCP, it should then open up everything to be seen
Maybe your router or switch needs to be introduced to learn the path (do you have a switch)
I am tempted to restart everything - sequentially
Turn everything off - leaving the wireless router off for 2-5mins
Turn on the router & let it settle for 2mins
Turn on the NAS - wait until its completed it start sequence
Turn on the NDS
Turn on the switch (if you have one, if you don't you should have !!!)
Check the NDS display, set it to NAS (UPuP) & press List/OK & it should show a NAS connection.
If not re-run the install disc
Are you trying to use the Synology as a backup? If so, search for my thread 'synology question' and you will find tips to get it sorted out.
Thanks Mike. I will try that tomorrow. I don't have a switch, but if I continue to have a problem I will get one. I have been keeping it simple - there is no-one else trying to use the network.
Hi HH - it is not for a backup. My unitiserve is getting full so it is time to expand.
Ok can see the network share now (had to map the network drive). No idea how to promote it to the default music store via the dct. The manual doesnt seem to correspond to the screen i am seeing. How do you do it? It must be simple when you know how.
The problem seems that the "Set as store" option is greyed out.
This is probably where you need to set up a brand new folder on the nas, with a simple name such as musicoverflow, and use that. The folder you are trying to use probably has some content.
It is a new NAS. I set up an emply folder called 2014music. I suspect there must be an error connecting to the NAS or folder. A DCT manual would be nice! I will contact naim support.
On the Naim website, under Knowledge Base, there is a link to "Setting Up a NAS as an additional Server Storage" and there is a specific link for setting up a Synology server.
I remember that once I set it up as per Naim's instructions, I was able to see the Synology server on the DTC and set the folder on the server as a music store.
Thanks TN - I will have a look.
Aha! This looks like exactly what I need. Will try it this evening and report back.
Brilliant! Thanks TN you are a star. Normal service has been resumed.
