UnitiServe, how to fix a static IP adress ?

Posted by: JR Dubuy on 12 November 2014

hello All ,

I want to assign a specific IP adress to my UnitiServe, with DHCP mode disabled

I have tried all my possibilities to fix it : from PC , from iPad, but can't access the way for changing settings ?

The UnitiServe application opened on my PC thru Internet Explorer and the actual IP adress propose the command "settings" / "status" .

It indicates the actual IP adress and the setting "DHCP enabled" , but but I don't find the way to change anything in it ...

than's for help

You need to download the Set IP tool from the Naim website. I think you'll find it under downloads on the UnitiServe page. You'll need various numbers that you will find in the router; DNS gateway, subnet mask and a couple of others.

Set the DHCP range in the router above the numbers you use for the system. Eg my router allocates from 200, with the system on 110, 120 and 140.

I just did it at my router, simple, and solved a multitude of connectivity problems.

Assuming you have an ADSL router, probably supplied by your ISP, and that it's acting as your DHCP server, find your Unitiserve in its LAN settings and give it a static address from there, probably keeping all other devices dynamic.

There is such a thing as the 'Set IP tool', which you can download from the Naim website, but nobody has yet been able to explain to me the purpose of setting it at the US end as opposed to at the DHCP server. In any case, the tool is PC only, so as a Mac user, I can't use it.

You need to set the IP at both ends.

I don't doubt that you're right. I'd quite like to understand why you're right, and why that helps, given that things seem to be working for me having only done it at the router. Eventually, I'll borrow a PC and give it a go.

There is no single, universal, solution.  If your system is working, it's working.  If it's not, try what HH wrote about.  He's not wrong merely because you don't need that solution in your particular setup.

In another thread, it was pointed out that the UnitiServe (workgroup = NAIM) and the PC from which you are running the Set IP Tool must be on the same Windows workgroup (i.e., set your PC's workgroup to NAIM). This tool uses a different discovery method than the Desktop Client, for which this step is not required.

There may be an argument made in favor of fixing the IP at the router (i.e., DHCP reservation) rather than using a static IP, inasmuch as the UPnP discovery process seems to favor this. Storage, on the other hand, could easily benefit from a static IP.

Thank you Hungryhalibut,

I'm just on the edge to fix this IP adress using the NAIM "Set IP tool" , just a question before to launch it :

what do you mean exactly by "system" ?

I suppose it's the IP adresses for the NAIM devices,

Eg, I will have this kind of allocation of numbers :

192.168.1.1    for the router

192.168.1.2    for my computer

192.168.1.x

192.168.1.y .... for some other devices

192.168.1.X    for my UnitiServe

192.168.1.Z    for my Uniti 2

192.168.1.200

until

192.168.1.250  for DHCP range

his that right ?

I don't understand exactly why, but the order between IP adresses of NAIM Uniti devices and the DHCP range seems to be critical ? ...

thank you again for your quick answer

And another question in relation with the end of my previous message :

I've changed the configuration of my other device "Uniti 2" (from the front pannel and remote control).

The new IP static adress has been recorded, OK,

but the other parameters (Gateway et DNS) has been changed ? and I don't know hox to fix them again ?

thank you

let's forget this last question,

I had no found that Gateway, DNS and so could also be fixed by frontpanel and remote.

bye

By system I mean the hifi. My SU is 110, the US is 120 and the NAS is 140. The DHCP range is set to start at 200, which covers everything else - iPhones, iPad, laptops, Xbox. It's very simple, and works really well (fingers crossed!!).

thank you Hungryhalibut,

I think the theory is now OK for me,

let's go to practice ... with fingercrossed ...
