Spotify / quobuz.

Posted by: grahambateman on 14 November 2014

Ok so Im just trying to get my head round this.

i have my naim system and now use streaming for all of my listening.

thing is naim  are all about the sound , and source

 is everything.

so I use spotify  premium via the connect into my naim system , and I understand that this is at 320.

so if naim are now embedding the spotify app in there new items as reported , surly the rate will still be 320 ! So where is the advantage. ?  I'm all for naim embedding the apps in there equipment , but where is the hi res . I am also trialling quobuz . But this is only via the sonos so isn't the rate the same as spotify , or am I missing something ?

sorry if this is a daft question but I'm after the best streaming into the naim system.

thanks

then buy a half way decent sff computer and run your streams from there. This is not rocket science. A computer is going to have far far far more headroom than a little board naim put into their streamers. Its going to be BETTER.

I just don't get why people round here procrastinate so much, the solution is simple, superior and cheap. You still get have naim for the sound quality, with the back up of mega corps such as windows or mac to deliver consistent quality and upgrades and latest softwares as they become available.

win. win.

Hi.
Ok I have not heard of this option before.
So an sff is basically like a miniature pc I guess.
Do you have any sites where I could purchase.

Also how do connect it my naim system . And how does quobuz for example stream to it.
Thanks

Graham

Qobuz played into a Naim system sounds far better than Spotify. I'm trialling Qobuz ATM after trying Spotify and Tidal and Qobuz gets my vote.

Graham, Spotify and Qobuz use different formats in their premium quality streams.

  • Spotify premium stream: 320 kbps Ogg-Vorbis lossy compressed codec
  • Qobuz premium stream: approx < 1.2 Mbps FLAC lossless compressed codec

Therefore assuming your receiver/decoder is not doing anything silly like re lossy encoding the stream, there will be more musical/audio information retained in the Qobuz streams over the Spotify streams. Also note Spotify will discard musical info progressively so as to retain the 320kbps rate, where as Qobuz will vary its data rate to ensure no musical/audio information is lost.

i hope that helps.

Simon

Yes small form factor. Mac mini or Intel NUC as examples, virtually silent. Have IR sensors on the front if you need but can easily be controlled from that there iPad.

Hide them away if they offend you but, the power and headroom will give you far more options, giving you the ability to use any service being offered out there
