Major NAS Networking complexity issues..again with NAIM HDX

Posted by: Jeff888 on 15 November 2014

Not sure if anyone can help me before I throw my HDX out of the window... but it would appear there are many many out there with similar frustrations. Simply but I cant setup network shares and get the HDX to constantly access them on a netgear NAS. Before I recently moved the system worked (to a point although regularly flaky connectivity) and just had a  recent repair of the HDX and since reconnecting means I cant get the HDX to access any of the shares setup (and they were there before) . Ive deleted them, re set them, done all the things imaginable and still the HDX wont connect to the NAS properly.

Having read so many posts on here its obvious to me that this technology is so complex its never going to be installable to anyone without a network degree. I was thinking of upgrading to a NDS but this reminds me how overly complex this is to setup and use.

My issue is the DTC sees the shares as offline. Then they change periodically to either; online, pending, host scan then go offline. They are active. The red dot on the HDX goes amber then green then back to red. The N-serve app sees the shares, under device name and then they disappear again even after Ive been able to play a track or two.

Its so frustrating and tiresome. I'm now regretting getting into this over complex world of streaming as its far too flaky.

Anyone have any other ideas that I could try please?

Gerald

Hi Jeff888, I can't help you directly with your question, but I would suggest to make contact with the friendly folks at naim support.

Im sure they wound be able to help you sort out your issue with you.

Good luck, hope you get back to enjoying the sounds again soon rather than being troubled bynetworking issues.

Hi

A couple of things that may help. First the problems of networking. There is a iPad app called Net Analyser. It is very easy to use and will at least help you determine that your network is all connected and functioning. It will scan your network and list all items on your network and their current state and details. It is important to know that you network is connected and functioning correctly Before looking at other matters.

The second point is have you set up Upnp on the Netgear Nas which I think is required unless you are using a Upnp server on a computer.

Gerald,

Paul is right. Call Phil and he will get this sorted for you.

In general the HDX is solid and reliable.  It is a good way to get into streaming.

I wonder what NAS box you are using? Is the NAS set up to stay on and keep connections open constantly? Also I wonder if the network setup reliable? Is all the cabling, switch and IP numbers OK?

For the HDX no UPNP server is required. It is a UPNP server.

I am looking forward to getting my HDX back from repair soon!

I have never understood why people have problems with simple networking. Is it of Naim's making?

Do you see the NAS and all of it's shares from a PC?

Extremely unlikely. But this doesn't stop Naim from jumping in and helping out. They are top people and Phil is a top bloke who will sort it out - probably.

Well it was working before the HDX failed and doesn't now .....simple networking ? there's nothing simple about this stuff.

I don't have a HDX but if I understand correctly it is basically a computer which, among other things, does the job of finding the audio files from the network i.e. other computers and network drives and plays them in a similar way to a server. I can't see the need for the UPnP server being enabled on the NAS drive since the HDX would need the NAS drive solely for storing the audio files. Is it possible that there is a UPnP server running on the NAS drive and that this is causing a conflict on the network with the HDX ?

Hi Jeff,

Drop me a mail on either support@naimaudio.com or phil.harris@naimaudio.com and I'll take a look ...

One thing that we have seen that is causing increasing issues is when ISP are hijacking unresolved DNS lookups and directing them to alternative or suggested sites - this is naughty of them! This can cause the issue that you're seeing and is simple enough to check for and resolve.

Actually - I think you *HAVE* dropped me an email this morning and we're down to look at this on Friday?

I had exactly this problem with the shares, Phil assured me it was a network problem.  It took me weeks - with next to zero network knowledge - to sort out.  Something ion the network had changed,  My sky router modem had started dishing out DHCP instructions when previously my apple Airport extreme was the hub of my network doing this job. Having gained access to the sky router i turned this feature off and all came good.  My AE ran the show as before and everything returned to normal.  I'm sure Phil can probably log on to your network and check this out and talk you through it but it worked for me and i had exactly the same systems and came close to throwing both HDX and myself out of the window.  There will be a solution!  Hope dies last
