Canadian musicians - indie, pop, etc
Posted by: Jeff Anderson on 17 November 2014
It is amazing how little we hear of artists from north of the border, here in the US. Any recommendations welcome. Of course there is Sarah Mc and some well-known, but I am talking people who might be flying-under the radar here. Indie, pop, rock, etc. I check Juno awards from time to time but would be interested in others as well.
thanks

I like the Barr Brothers. Excellent live band also. Try their latest album Secret Operators. I suppose loosely described as Americana.
They have Rush, who could possibly need more?

That has been showing up on the listening thread, I learned about them a few weeks ago on CBS Saturday Morning which is co-hosted by a music lover and BB made an appearance that day. Didn't realize (or remember) they were Canadian. Thanks.

I love their first album from long ago and have your two favorites in a folder on Spotify that gets played from time to time. Thanks.
Harry Manx. An wonderful guitarist specializing in the mohan vihna. East Meets West is a great place to start.
Obviously one starts at RUSH!
Do you know how many bloody Canadian acts there are?
Bare Naked Ladies, Neil Young, KD Lang, Robbie Robinson, Randy Bachman (BTO), Feist,Jeff Healy, Shania Twain, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Alanis Morissette to name a few.
Not forgetting the greatest of them all Justin FFS Bieber.
Assist from Wiki BTW.

Seconded on Harry Manx Jeff as I think you would like him but try Wise and Otherwise first as that for me is probably his all round best album. I have everything plus a few other things scarce Live shows etc that he has recorded. Huge fan of his.
Little list for you
Micheal Jerome Browne
Kenny Rankine
Cash Brothers
Be Good Tanyas
Blue Rodeo
Bruce Cockburn
The Duhks
Great Lake Swimmers
The Guthries
Po Girl
The Sadies
The Sheepdogs
The Tragically Hip - my favorite Canadian band of all time.
Wailin Jennys
I could go on and list a lot of more obscure stuff but I won't. I also haven't listed the likes of Neil Young, The Band, Alanis Morisette, Arcadie Fire, Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Oscar Peterson, Mahogany Rush, Leonard Cohen amongst many others.
Good list Ewemon. A big +1 to Blue Rodeo. Where to start... how about Five Days in July
Anything by the Cowboy Junkies. If Margo Timmins' voice doesn't move you, you're not human. If I had to pick one...
Now, if your "etc." includes electronica, there's Deadbeat (Scott Monteith, originally from Ontario, but now in Berlin). Radio Rothko or Roots and Wire will give you a good idea of what he's about (or should I say aboot) :
Staying in electronica, Ramasutra, The East Infection :
I'll leave you with one that stands head and shoulders above just about everything in my music collection. It's in French and to my ears is Edgar Bori's best work (eponymous). An incredible recording. French chansonnier meets jazz, electronica and cabaret theatre. Bori has the best male voice I've ever heard. When I worked at the Salon Son & Image here in Montreal, we often closed out the listening sessions with the track "Cyrano" from this album. Followed by a minute of silence to take it all in.
Harry Manx. An wonderful guitarist specializing in the mohan vihna. East Meets West is a great place to start.
Minor correction. I never noticed until now that the album title is actually West Eats Meet.
Not forgetting The Arcade Fire, one of the biggest bands in the world, or Godspeed You Black Emperor for something more challenging.
Ewemon listed him, Bruce Cockburn is a great listen. Every album I have of him is well recorded.
Add In-Flight Safety as well. Their most recent release, Conversationalist, is an absolute cracker. They must be from Nova Scotia that is an amazing beauty in its own right.
also
-Caribou (electronica) try "The Milk of Human Kindness"
-Broken Social Scene (indie) try "Feel Good Lost"
-Ron Sexsmith (singer, songwriter) try "Other Songs"
Wish I could add Boards of Canada, but they are Scottish...
Ron Sexsmith is brilliant and highly underrated.
Also don't forget Basia Bulat.

+1 Basia Bulat. Lovely. Check out Basia performing Springsteens "Glory Days" on You Tube
One of my favorite artists is Diana Krall. Looking forward to her new album "Wallflower" that will be released in February 3rd.

Oh yes. That is just incredible isn't it? She plays that instrument (and a few other weird ones) in her concerts.

Diana and Elvis live in our neighbourhood. So does Sarah M. We occasionally see them out and about.
I would endorse the inclusion of Blue Rodeo (great band) and the Cowboy Junkies (one of my favourites - I have most of their stuff on one format or another).
My personal favourite Blue Rodeo album is 'Diamond Mine, although I like most of their stuff':
is pretty good as well.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Bryan Adams
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Bryan Adams
For the same reason Celine hasn't been mentioned either... It's shite!
Don't think I've seen them mentioned yet, but If folk music with more than a hint of acoustic 'country' appeals to you, then I would recommend the 'Be Good Tanyas':
Possibly try "China Town":
or "Hello Love":
... and from there to the man who broke up The Band, Robbie Robertson's eponymous album. A classic.
I haven't seen Gordon Lightfoot mentioned as yet.
