Canadian musicians - indie, pop, etc

Posted by: Jeff Anderson on 17 November 2014

It is amazing how little we hear of artists from north of the border, here in the US.  Any recommendations welcome.  Of course there is Sarah Mc and some well-known, but I am talking people who might be flying-under the radar here.  Indie, pop, rock, etc. I check Juno awards from time to time but would be interested in others as well.

thanks

On the Be Good Tanya's / Po' Grl theme, Frazey Ford is doing some nice solo work.

I don't think Sarah Harmer has been mentioned either

Lynne Hanson. A beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. I saw her supporting Steve Forbert a while back and she was quite captivating.

New Pornographers, awesome pop band, where to start? I prefer albums 1 - 3, they've lost it a bit lately, methinks...

Associated acts also very good -- AC Newman solo stuff, and Destroyer (Dan Bejar), would add Neko Case if she was Canadian (which she ain't).

Hello

I do listen to Neko (solo)  and with New Pornographers.  The other mentions

are new to me so I will explore. Thanks.

Then there are the folkies/country stars like the dynamic duo of

Ian and Sylvia Tyson (including their solo albums)

The one and only Stompin' Tom Connors

The master of the ballad Stan Rogers (Barret's Privateers is a great album and song)

The master of the guitar, David Wilcox (you have to see him live to fully appreciate what he can do with a guitar)

Ian Thomas

Murray McLaughlin

Spirit of the West

On the Alternative/New Wave/Punk Side (most of these bands I used to book for shows back in the day):

Blue Peter

The Battered Wives (had to shorten the name to the Wives due to public outcry in the 80's, the Uganda Stomp is a classic)

Teenage Head

The Demics

The Government

The Pukka Orchestra

Zon

Nash The Slash

FM

Goddo

Sloan

to name just a few.

Best bet for anyone with a remote interest in Canuck music is pop on to maplemusic.com where you find an extensive list of Canuck artists.

Geofiz has listed some of the most important Canadian artists such as Stan Rogers an absolute legend.

Used to have some David Wilcox discs but gave them away.

Try

Ray Bonneville

Garnet Rogers

Ruth Moody

James Keelaghan

Buffy Saint Marie

Stephen Fearing

Sarah Harmer

Feist

Nelly Furtado

There are a couple of others that are on the tip of my tongue.

Doesn't hurt to have an ice cold Molson in hand as well, eh?

It does hurt leaving skin behind on the bottle.  Only drink Lager if there is no beer available.

Lynne Hanson. Saw her supporting Steve Forbert a year or two back. Beautiful folk rock and she's gorgeous which doesn't hurt IMHO.

Ashley MacIsaac

Natalie MacMaster

McGarrigle Sisters (Kate and Anna McGarrigle)

Anne Murray

Rita MacNeil

Frank Mills

Burton Cummings

The Guess Who

Bachman-Turner Overdrive

....

Ben Heppner (tenor)

Maureen Forrester (contralto)

Glenn Gould (pianist)

Marc-Andre Hamelin (pianist)

Angela Hewitt (pianist)

Anton Kuerti (pianist)

Jan Lisiecki (pianist)

Louis Lortie (pianist)

Janine Fialkowska (pianist)

James Ehnes (violinist)

Jean-Guihen Queyras (cellist)

Ofra Harnoy (cellist)

Amanda Forsyth (cellist)

I'll stop here for now...
