Unitiserver SSD: NAS goes offline after playing a few songs

Posted by: kiba on 26 March 2011

When replaying from my NAS (Buffalo Link Station PRO in raid1 mode), it plays for maybe 10 minutes (3-4 songs maybe even 10 ) and then goes offline (When using the Naim WEB browser IF, "Manage music stores" the NAS storage location is turned into red, shortly it becomes amber and then back in green again, all within 10 seconds. The NAS is cabled on the router and the Unitserver is cabled there as well,  I can log onto the NAS from my PC and all shares are displayed. Yes it could be the NAS setup, and outside this forums scope, but maybe it could be something in the setup of the unitiserver, I'm a newbee to streaming so any help is appreciated

My suggestion would be:

1. Check all the connections are solid - no slipping RJ45s;

2. Check the logs on the NAS and for the US via the DTC;

If you can't find anything my next thought would be to power-cycle both the US and the NAS, and then see if the issue repeats.

Hello Kiba

Whenever I see this kind of problem I immediately think that the drive is probably auto-rescanning the library. Drives are often set to do this by default, however, in my experience this will result in the NAS loosing contact with the device.

It may be worth your while checking and switching this function off, if it is on. Rescanning can then be done manually, only necessary after new data has been added.

You have a network issue. I would guess its neither the nas or the uniti, its the network dropping out.

How are you connecting both devices, is it all hard wired, what is the router and switch etc?

I rebooted the NAS and the Offline-problem seems to have disapeared. US and NAS is hardwired to the whireless router, using two of the 4 build-in eathernet ports (one is used for my desk-top and one free port).

Hi K,

Glad it seems to be going OK.

Like garyi may first reaction was network - hence my suggestion of checking the connections.

Are you using manual IP addesses or using DHCP?

DHCP as I'm a Network newbee, so standard/automatic configurations is used

I have now defined the IP adress as "Static" in the router, hope this will stabilize things. Many thx for the help

As a rule, anything that provides a service on a network (routers, printers, NASs etc.) should be set to a static IP address rather than DHCP as otherwise they *CAN* change IP address (usually if the router has been rebooted) when their DHCP lease expires and is renewed which will cause an interruption in service.

This is something that affects all networking devices to some extent - not just Naim's Music Servers...

Cheers

Phil
