A new Design in Naim-App 2.2

Posted by: henryjulius on 25 November 2014

Hello there,
first I want to thank the Naim-Team for being so calm in these difficult days of releasing the new app.
I was so angry because stability and function suggested I bought a third world equipment. But all the problems solved - it was the apple-ios 8.xx. Now everything is fine.

When app 2.2 comes around - what do you think about this:
Let's talk about making the app even better.
Clicking on "artist" we get (ugly) folders - clicking on the folders we get the covers just for this artist.

-> Solution 1: As easy as this: instead of an (ugly) folder one of the covers is displayed. (as in so many other players).
-> Solution 2: to become better than other players:  instead of an (ugly) folder all the covers are displayed. A little creativity and the app is getting a great design.

I really like the new app, and didn't have problems with it, but I seem to be in a minority.

Unlikely. People seldom post to say how happy they are. If they did, I think most forums would look a lot different, not to mention busy.

My gripe with the app, now that it is stable most of the time is that there is no volume and playback control from everywhere in the app and that you can't see the iPad top status bar. So it's backwards for the sake of a new look and Spotify, which doesn't interest me in the least. It was revealed that the old, universally accessible volume control was unstable. The solution after several years of development? Kill it. This smacks of a kind of make do mentality that I don't see from the likes of Linn, Sonos, etc. It makes me wonder if they have a lack of resources. Yet Naim sponsor a racing team, so that can't be it.

People are so pleased that their app now works that the missing features have been forgotten. And when launched, Spotify will be so super smashing great and generate so much bandwidth that those of us who just want the basic functionality of nStream as part of the new all dancing app will be forgotten. Unlike you we are the true minority, so what do we matter?

The app does display a cover instead of a folder if the UPNP server presents it.

I use Asset and if you enable upstream artwork this achieves what you want.

Completely agree with the volume control, I now have the remote out for this rather than it being tidied away.  If it were there before then surely it's possible to bring it back.

I have also resorted to the remote. No biggie but hardly progress, particularly when we had previously moved on from this. Again, it's hardly sweat inducing to leave the app to check WiFi signal or remind myself when to recharge, but it gets on my nerves and I'm so used to glancing there from every other app I run that I have forgotten once and needed to recharge when I had been planning on listening. You don't even need a hard top bar (although the new app has one), many apps subtly superimpose a set of translucent icons.

I think a third party may save the day, possibly at a price but what price convenience?

Putting on my grumpy old git hat (do I ever take it off?):

I will not pay for music which I do not own a physical copy of - even if it's just a set of downloaded files and a cover image. I pay a TV licence fee because I have no choice, but that's it.

I will not pay for music of lower than 16/44 quality. I don't mind downsampling to low quality copies of the files I have paid to own copies of, but buy lossy in the first place? Not in my little universe.

I have a big and still growing music collection which is a labour of a lifetime's love. When I'm sitting in the lounge with my quality playback system, why would I feed low quality bilge through it? I do that in the car, in my office or anywhere I can carry a suitable device.

My HiFi system is not for the likes of Spotify and whilst I respect anybody else's need/wants to combine the two, I feel that those of us who have no interest in this direction have been strapped in for a race to the bottom.

Should say that I don't think the introduction of a service like Spotify to streamers is "the bottom". Allen alluded to the possibility that new app development and the functionally that shakes out is too focused on this feature. I agree.

First world problems!

I do hear where you are coming from though.  My UQ should land tomorrow, and are we saying that you can no longer adjust the volume using the Nstream app??  I haven't had the chance to try it yet so forgive the question if it appears stoopid.

Hi trickydickie Richard,

all other apps/player (not for NAIM) show covers when clicking on artists, except the Naim app, so I don't think that it is a server problem.

And your Naim app (server=Asset?; btw which NAS?) can sort genre/ then artist with covers and no folders?

You can still adjust the volume providing you conform to the new selection procedure for making the volume/mute control accessible. You can no longer adjust volume/mute no matter where you are in the app.

The folder artwork is served up by the UPNP server.

This is what I see when I click on Album Artist, Artist etc.

I am using Asset running on a Raspberry PI (although the Windows version behaves in the same way).  The files that Asset serves are stored on a Netgear ReadyNas RN104.

Richard is correct -- Asset has an option that can be enabled:

UpStream Artwork enables artwork from the first discovered track to appear next to an Artist, or Genre

I choose not to enable it because I find scrolling through an artist (or genre) name list is faster than using album art icons (which are often abstract, and do not portray the artist).

Anyone know if this is possible when using a Unitiserve as the upnp server?

Posted on: 05 December 2014 by heihei

Anyone?

Posted on: 05 December 2014 by Bart

No the Naim servers don't support this at this time as I understand.
