UPnP Streaming

Posted by: Mike47 on 26 November 2014

My new Uniti 2 is working well except that I cannot get it to connect with my computer/router in order to use the UPnP system. Can anyone advise me what to do?

You need to be far more specific mate, what can you not do?

Physically insert the ethernet cable?

Put in the wifi password?

Find the subnet mask for a fixed IP?

Can you get to internet radio?

UPNP means lots of things do you actually have a music server being indexed by a proper programme dishing out said UPNP?

etc etc

I have wireless connection. The unit simply says "no server found" when I try to connect using the remote.

I use iTunes on my MacBook Pro. I have no problems with iRadio/iPod/Bluetooth/Spotify etc.

Ok, what UPnP media server are you running? Examples include Twonky and Asset. Itunes is not a UPnP server.

Once you have identified you are running a UPnP media server please confirm where it is running ie on your NAS or computer etc.

OK thank you. As far as I can tell UPnP offers me nothing more than bluetooth streaming so I think that I will pass on this and avoid further techie complications.

Many thanks for your comments.

Hi Mike!

Not 100% what you mean with "the UPnP system" but just to give you the basics, not knowing how much you already know:

You can NOT play music from iTunes on your UQ2, the UQ2 can only play music stored (on a hard drive, NAS or on your computer) somewhere in your network via the UPnP protocol. You need to connect the UQ2 to the same network wireless or via ethernet.

If you donĀ“t want to use that setup you will have to connect a hard drive/memory stick/ipod to the UQ2 to play music "direct" from that source.

You can store music on your computer or on a NAS (NAS makes more sense as your MacBook Pro otherwise always must be running).

Your Mac does NOT have a UPnP server so you need to download software if you decide to use your computer as storage. Once installed and up and running the UQ will find the server and then your are ready to listen to your music.

If you buy a NAS it will normally have some kind of UPnP software running so all you need to to is to put your music in a Music or Media folder.

Once you make sure that the UPnP server software on the NAS is running it will show up on your UQ and you are ready to go.

Good luck! And ask your dealer to help you with the setup if you get stuck.

Thanks; all very helpful. I am going to stick to bluetooth as it works and is simple to set up and use.

Music sent over Bluetooth is compressed and does not sound as good as sending via ethernet. You really do need to proper server if you want to hear what your new expensive acquisition is capable of.

+1, if you can't use upnp, which is best, at least use a thumbdrive and fill it with flac files.  Bluetooth won't get anywhere near what your kit is capable of.

+2. Even the advanced Bluetooth AptX-Lossless standard is not completely lossless although gets close. But regular AptX is typically very ( I think around 8 to 1) compressed and lossy, and even that is still an improvement over the regular SBC that Apple uses on iOS devices.

But it does raise the question, which Bluetooth codecs are Naim supporting.. Because Bluetooth audio codecs certainly do vary significantly in audio quality.

If you want to try a upnp server on your mac, you can try minimserver http://minimserver.com/downloads/index.html

I recommend to try this (it is a very good upnp server). I am not using it on a mac, but on a synology NAS. But for testing, a mac will work fine, too, I think.

Hi Mike47,

if you have bought this new from a dealer, you have been seriously let down. Minimum expectation that your dealer set you up to utilise all its features, or at least explain how and what you need as a minimum to get going.

Where do you live? I would think someone on this forum including myself can help

regards

I went into my U.L purchase a bit blind and my dealer wasn't too helpful in explaining the somewhat in depth knowledge I needed to get the most out of it  ... but after many hours and helpful posts i am now using it how it supposed to be used  . For a little bit of time and effort you will reap the rewards  and see how good your bit of kit really is  ....
