Which upnp server?
Posted by: jc_x_c on 29 November 2014
I recently bought a Mu-So, generally very pleased with this.
All my music lives on a server Macintosh which is remote from the Mu-So and while the combination of iTunes and Apple's Remote application does work it's cumbersome, so I want to use upnp to get the music across the network into the Mu-So. The problem I have is there are so many upnp servers out there that I can download and use. I need advice on which is the best one and what the relative merits are between them.
From my own research the best ones so far seem to be wither Asset or Twonky although these do seem to have their quirks
Thank you for any advice or opinions you can offer
The evidence here puts Asset and Twonky at opposite ends of the spectrum. Much love for Asset.
There is an Asset for OS X; folks here will chime in with their experiences with it. It's much newer than the Windows version.
Never had any problems with Asset, recommend it. Straightforward to setup and use.

Using both Asset and Minim on a Mac mini core 2 duo with Lion OSx. CDs ripped as flac and transcoded to wav with both. I prefer Asset with the old Naim app and Minim with the new.
Tried Twonky but found it less stable on my system than either Asset or Minim.

PS Streaming to a 2011 Uniti.
Well, I like Twonky (hiding behind the couch now...) on my Qnap NAS: serves everything very reliable, mp3/flac to my Uniti (and smartphones, tablets, and the like) and all those pesky video formats to my TV (and again, smartphones, tablets, etc.).

As was said before, asset is reliable and the setup is straightforward. If you have a large collection of classical music, you should have a close look at minimserver which is as reliable as asset, but much more flexible.

Asset is floating to the top of the list, almost as the last server standing. I have it but I do not like it much; albums do go missing, the lists (artist / album) do not make it easy to just select an album and play it without going through a fairly long series of thumb selections.
I also have Playback, which is sadly defunct, but it is still better; it finds all the albums, presents them in a more intuitive and attractive manner, and gets you where you want to go with fewer steps.
I tried minim server and elyric as well. Neither seemed to be fully functional for me.
BTW jc_x_c: my rips are in WAV, though if I make AIFF copies, Asset is actually able to see the albums that it missed in WAV format. Still shoddy on album artwork though.
And for reference; using iTunes to rip CD's onto my iMac.
Run Plex. It plays very well on mac and works well to naim devices.
Oh and its free.
Thank you all for the help, information and advice...it's greatly appreciated!

I like 'Wonky Twonky' too! However, I am now having this amazing affair with PLEX!
Tried them all. Asset the is best and most stable.
Don't think Plex works with flac.

I use it on a Qnap NAS, and on a iMac. It definitely works and plays on my iMac and ND5 XS.

Oh yes it does..........

I'm streaming my iMac iTunes library to a mu-so with MinimServer. I like the way it sits unobtrusively in the menu bar. It works well with the Naim app on an iPhone or iPad mini and supports 24-bit FLAC and Apple Lossless as well as the normal iTunes formats. The one thing I had to learn the hard way is that you can't control the mu-so with more than one iDevice at a time :-)
Asset here in use And i Love it. Used diffrent before. Since 1 month i use also a Ripnas Asset
