Can I just use one bay, of a two bay NAS?

Posted by: The Meerkat on 30 November 2014

I have searched the web for an answer to this, but can't find one.

I have a single bay Qnap NAS (TS-112), which sits in another room, away from my ND5 XS, because of the fan noise. My backups are performed using a USB HDD. I want to upgrade my NAS to the Qnap HS 210 Silent (fanless) NAS, but it has two bays. (Qnap don't do a silent NAS with a single bay)

Can I use a two bay NAS, but just install one drive? Will it still work?

Sorry if it's a stupid question

I am 98% sure that the answer is "yes."  And I was browsing their user forums, and found a few references to people setting these up with one hdd, and then asking about adding a second one later.

The answer is yes.

you can add a second one any time.

the second one can be added in several configurations:

- as a mirror copy, this won't give you extra storage but act as a safety copy for hardware failures;

- as an extension to the first drive, so it shows as one big drive;

- as a separate drive, so it shows as two drives.

Meerkat

I recently installed a QNAP TS-112P NAS which sits on the same equipment rack as the rest of my hi-fi/AV equipment, 3 metres from my seating position. I've been surprised how quiet it runs. No worse than a "humming" Naim PA.

Bart: Thank you. Just couldn't find a reference to it anywhere.

Aleg: Phew! That's good news. It's also good to have that flexibility.

Dave: Yes, that's where mine used to sit. I think the older I get, I'm getting less tolerant! The fan was bugging me, and that together with the hum of my HiCap DR, was spoiling low level music. Mind you, not that I have it at low level very often!
