Hard disk player 1.7b update - how to do it for a UnitiServe
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 01 December 2014
I've updated my UnitiServe to 1.7b without a hitch, and installed the new DTC.
Only two small grumbles: the Newest CDs list is still only 20 long when viewed in the Naim app; it would have been a good opportunity to increase it to match the 100 shown in nServe, and the instructions PDF only refers to the HDX, when there must be lots more Unitiserves in use.
Anyway, in case it helps anyone with a Serve, this is what to do:
Burn the ISO disk.
Stick in in the Serve.
After a minute or so it will pop out.
The update took about 10 minutes. Watch the Serve during this time. (See below). Eventually it will start to flash, which seems to last a minute or so.
The flashing then stops.
Press and hold the logo to shut the Serve down. Then turn it off with the switch on the back, and turn it on again.
That's it.
The reason it's important to watch the Serve: if you go off to make tea while the update is happening, you may miss the flashing stage and you won't know for sure that it's ok to restart the Serve. You must not turn off and restart until the update process is complete.
The old DTC will no longer work. Uninstall it and load the new one onto your computer from the disk that you have burned.
Thanks a ton for posting. For some reason, the Naim webpage that advertises the update says nothing about how to install it. Those of us who have been through this before know to burn a cd, but I imagine that new customers might be a bit clueless. Or they see something I don't re install instructions!
As soon as I click on the downloaded zip file, my computer (Windows 7) asks if I want to burn the cd. I just click 'yes' and that's it.
None of my machines (windows laptop, macbook pro) have cd drives any more. Crazy I tell 'ya!

I use a Mac, do I need to unzip the UnitiServe file and burn the iso file on a disc?
I've installed it on my HDX. Installation went smoothly apart from an error message relating to (I think it said) a "GUI interface mismatch" or some such. Anyway, the version is confirmed installed as 1.7b and appears to be working OK so far.
I was just beginning to think that we were at the end of the road for updates - albeit this is a minor one. Phil posted that we would not get Spotify Connect and it seems that Naimnet is dead (no website any more). Hopefully there is still more mileage to be had from these products.

You certainly need to burn it to disc - whether unzipping is a separate process I don't know. My laptop just did it.
Things not so good now...
It seems to have screwed up the ripping - I just get a message saying "not enough free space" and it spits the disc out.
Mine is an SSD model, the NAS has 0.7G of free space.
What a pain.
It sounds as though it's forgotten where it should be storing the music. Do you need to reconnect it to the music store? I tested mine with a cd that arrived today and it was fine - mine is the HDD model.
I found an old forum link:
https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...93#41551097918396293
...and have followed the instructions to purge the image cache.
So far it has not made a difference BUT I notice from the encoding qeue that there is a lot of activity going on encoding to MP3 (it should make a mirror of MP3's). So perhaps this has become unblocked and once this is finished it will rip again.
Mmm... Something else I might just wait a while before attempting!!
Just completed mine and so far, so good. Watch this space!?

Good point Bart! None of the new Apple stuff have CD drives. Using a CD to update firmware is almost Stoneage! Naim streamers are updated via USB.
All seems to be OK now.
Purged the image cache, rebuilt the database and emptied the recycle bin.
You can definitely burn the .iso file on a Mac, using Disk Utility. Just be sure to burn the .iso itself, and not the entire folder. The best way to do it is to run Disk Utility, put in a blank CD, and then from the File menu of Disk Utility pick the iso file. (You do need to unzip the zip file that you've downloaded from the Naim website.)
I inserted the cd, and it stayed in about 45 seconds. The uServe just sat there for 8 minutes (although I was watching with nServe and it did go offline right away). Then it blinked for about a minute, after which the front panel light stayed lit. At that point it was back online, and nServe reported that it had 1.7b I restarted it anyway for good measure but am not 100% sure such was necessary.
What does the update do, any new features?

Yes, I don't see why you need to manually restart it, given that it has already restarted itself. But the instructions say to do so, and on that basis you should - there must be a reason somewhere.

The news release tells to what it does. The most significant seems to be looking in musicbrainz for disc information if the AMG lookup fails, plus various other technical changes. I was hoping it would finally provide auto backup of the downloads folder, but it doesn't unfortunately.
Backup of the Downloads folder DEFINITELY is a feature that should be added.
I wish Naim would add the facility to 1) edit the Performer metadata (as a minimum) or ideally allow full metatdata editing - I don't know why this hasn't been enabled; as a "nice to have" 2) allow metadata editing for Downloads. Not sure if there is a technical reason 2) can't be done but with downloaded music becoming (I assume generally, it certainly is for me) ever more popular this would seem to be a useful idea.
Can Anyone help. I'm doing the Unitiserve upgrade. I get to the page where 5 zipped files are listed (abbreviated) to NS01, NS02, NS03, NSHDX and NSSRV Updates. I guess I want the last one for my UServe but clicking on it just produces a list of files but no option to create a disk. I must be missing something. Thanks

The NSSRV is the UnitiServe.

This is because the SSD lost its Store somewhere along the road. I just had the same problem, but got it solved. Assuming you have a NAS your Store was automatically demoted to a Share (happens sometimes in case of network drop-outs). You just need to demote it back to being a Store WITHOUT making any changes to the Store (if you do you screw up your music database).

The NSSRV is the UnitiServe. Thanks Sorry if I'm being a bit dense, but is the NSSRV file the one I transfer to CD? I'm sure that last update created a CD automatically.
Well I did it last night. The update went as planned, however I had to rescan my music stores and my music shares. Before the update the system said I had 1538 albums and after only 1531, I wonder where those 7 went?
Tim
Also I wonder if the "up time" bug has been fixed. Where the Unitiserve counts up to 25 days and then goes negative, counts back to 0 and then back to positive and so on?
