New Re-issue Vinyl or Mint "Old" Vinyl

Posted by: Roadie Simon on 03 December 2014

What's the consensus amongst the forum massif? Better to buy Older Mint or New Re-issue Vinyl?

Original every time. There are one or two exceptions with some all analogue reissues but the general rule would be to buy the original if you can.

If you can find and afford them.

So this begs the question - Are we talking first pressing or just general release / import?

Posted on: 03 December 2014 by Steve J

First press if you can find them at a price acceptable to you, but even second, third pressings are more often better than most reissues that have had some form of digital 'intereference'.

Why third Steve?

To be honest, most of my "old" vinyl sounds good & I'm guessing most are later pressings & to be quite honest I don't "collect" records!

So, what's the purpose of your question? Waste peoples time?

No Tony didn't want to waste yours or anyone else's time, just wondered what others opinions were!!

Seems a bit harsh Tony. If you feel like your time's being wasted then why read or respond?

To the OP, I'd agree with Steve J, first pressings and initial releases are my preference too. I really have not bought many "new re-issues", only when an original is rare or too costly for me.

I think mine was a valid question, Joe. I read all posts and, when the subject interests me, I get involved.. I hope I have not wasted too much of your time.

Thanks Tony. Not to worry, you haven't wasted my time. If I was concerned with that I wouldn't be here .

Anyhow, I can see where new vinyl re-issues are attractive to many, esp those that buy online, don't have access to used vinyl shops, or simply don't want to spend the time. There is a bit of a learning curve with inspecting the quality of old vinyl and reading matrix numbers is not always easy without doing some research. The price of a used original can exceed a new re-issue. I guess the pursuit of finding quality originals is part of the fun for me. It helps to establish a good relationship with a shop that will allow you to return used vinyl.

That's Ok, Joe. You did not have to delete your original post and change your avatar at the same time.I value your opinion and Iam still enjoying the great Travelling Wilburys vinyl set you recommended a while ago. Still enjoying them!

It's also important to note that a lot of very good music can be had on original vinyl that's cheaper than the reissue copy.

Hmm, I can still see my original post.

Changed my avatar for the holiday season. Did the same last year.

Happy holidays!
