Bulb advice

Posted by: count.d on 06 December 2014

I have just bought an antique illuminated globe (map). It still has the original tungsten bulb inside, but I can see with the long term use, the heat has caused a tiny bit of ageing of the map. I'm thinking of keeping this bulb in a box replacing it with a low energy one, which will produce less heat.

Does anyone know if a led or fluorescent bulb will produce less heat? Will either of these low energy bulbs produce uv light that could fade the map? Or any other issues.

Thanks.

Hi count.d. An LED's your best bet, much lower heat output ( it converts most of the electical energy to light not heat). You just need to check the physical size vs. wattage; some LEDs are rather larger than their incandescent counterparts & won't always fit. No issues with UV, they've a narrower band of light emission.

Try with 1/10 to 1/6 of the tungsten's watts.

These folks have most shapes & sizes of LED around & its www shopping

Find the existing bulb watts, then you can find that wattage for Lumens,  you can find that info on the www knowledge & spec pages, then find an LED lumens match.

The smallest is around 1.5W (heat) & it gives aprx 135lumens,

Thanks chaps. I'll go with the led route, as it's the heat and uv I'm worried about.
