Uniti Updates

Posted by: pzblues on 10 December 2014

Hi everybody, i recently purchased a pre-owned naim uniti (the original one) had a bit of a look around the internet and noticed that there are software updates available, my question is, do i need to run/install all of these updates or can i just go straight to the latest one which i believe is 3.9

Many thanks

Whenever there's an update the instructions usually say something like --  ensure you are using the most recent version of firmware/software before upgrading to the newer version--. So I suspect you'll have to go through them all in chronological order.

Have a look on the Naim Website/Customer Support/Product Updates if you haven't already been there.

Hi and thanks for the reply, the instructions provided don't mention anything regarding current versions etc, i will check naim support once again but have found it to be quite vague on the subject to be honest, i was rather hoping that somebody here had already been there and done it.

Thanks

It's my understanding that you can go straight to the latest version, which is 3.22. There will be another new version very soon, which will provide additional functionality, so you can either wait for that, or practice with 3.22 and do it again shortly.

HH is correct. Might be worth a little wait for the new one.

You can just download the latest 3.22 version and install once.

Thanks everyone, i have just had a look and it seems version 3.22 is for the Uniti 2, the latest version for the original uniti as far as i can see is 3.17, is this correct?

3.22 is the latest

There is a new series coming in the near future,  so might be an idea to wait for that.  You might need to install 3.22 before the new series can be installed.  Its up to you,  but considering there isn't much diff between 3.17 & 3.22,  I would wait.

Ok and thanks for that, so when i go to the naim updates page and version 3.22 is aligned with 'uniti 2' and not 'uniti' i can ignore that and install on my orig uniti, is this right?

I suggest you drop Naim an email, or call them, just to check. Better safe than sorry.

Which firmware version you can install depends on the hardware status of your Uniti. Since the introduction of the orginal Uniti there have been 2 hardware updates (if I am right).

The hardware status of your Uniti is reflected in the BC SW number which you can look up in your settings menu. On the Naim download page there are clear instructions with each firmware package, ie regarding the BC SW number ....

In my experience, Naim hardware will not let you "brick" a unit by installing firmware that is not right for it.

And in my experience, there ARE instances where you cannot jump all the way from A to B without installing intermediate updates.

I feel confident that you can install 3.17, and if I were you I would do so.  From there, if it will let you install 3.22 I would feel confident in doing so.  The installers "know" what unit you are connected to and will only install what works, in my experience.  But if you are worried, dropping an email to support will surely get you an answer.  My best advice is to email support.

agree call or e-mail Naim

But I think you will find all the streamers use the same firmware download package called "UnitiUpgrader"  (that works for all models) & it includes folders for all the streamer models & it selects & matches your model to the correct firmware.

Exactly!  The software magically knows what you're updating

Ahh excellent, ok will do 3.17 and then try 3.22

Many thanks

Really appreciate all the response, now my laptop has a 15 pin connector, the uniti a 9 pin connector, would that be where i would connect to install updates? Or do i need a usb to 9 pin serial connector?

Many thanks

The socket on the uniti is an RS232. You need an RS232 to USB lead.

Suggest you read Naim's update instructions as they have guidance on the right cable to get and the right software drivers.

It has usefule stuff like this in it:

Com port type List
NaimUniti, UnitiQute, NDX
Requires 9 pin to 9 pin RS232 serial cable (or USB to Serial converter - ones with FTDI or Prolific drivers are suggested. An example of which is available here:
For most up to date FTDI drivers, follow the below link:

For most up to date Prolific drivers, follow the below link:

Hi pzblues,
I would suggest to call or e mail Naim Support.
I'm sure the will be able to advise.

Hi, tried that and really wasn't much help, told me to warm it up and try again! My uniti is now stuck in upgrade mode, does anyone know how how i may be able to recover this??

In MY case, the 'abort warning' was over-zealous.  Aborting did not renter the unit unusable.  Given that your unit is not usable in its present state anyway, I'd abort and try again.  But that's me; please do what you feel comfortable with!

I use Servio on my server to stream films (don't like it for music and use Asset) it is a right pain for closing itself down in which case its invisible until you reboot it and its running again
