Cygwin

Anybody know anything about this? My new laptop appears to have it loaded although I can find no sign of it anywhere. No services, processes, folders, or other objects, visible or hidden. Every now and again I get a message saying it has stopped working and and as it's Linux on Windows related, of no interest to me, I just want to get rid.

I've googled but didn't get far. Instructions are fiddly and involve editing the registry, system paths etc but refer to objects I can't find.

Can anybody help?

Probably the CIA or MI6 spying on you, but no fear if you are not a guerrilla fighting on the wrong side ...

Take a look here https://www.cygwin.com/

It is something that makes Windows behave like Unix/Linux, especially from the command line interface. If you have no use for it then I would recommend getting rid of it.

As a software dev myself, I find it handy occasionally.

I just realized that all you want is to get rid of it? If so, please take a look at the following:

Thanks folks. I'd already come across this and hoped there may have been a nice little app to do it.

I do not think there is any app that helps you uninstall cygwin, you just need to  follow the instructions on the cygwin web site to uninstall it.

Or

you would want to reformat your hard drive and install windows from scratch.

Yes Peter I'll just have to like it or lump it. Reformatting is not something I want to do right now.

Seems to be a strange thing to have pre-installed on a user laptop. I'll check those instructions and maybe have a go.

Cheers and thanks to all for the advice.
