Software for streaming

Posted by: elkman70 on 14 December 2014

Hi,

i currently use Mac Mini, itunes, BitPerfect -> TeddyDac with asynchronous USB with bog standard USB cable.

There is some talk of Audirvana being a good bit of software and mention of other software packages too.

My question is:

do do any of these software packages actually make a difference?

Regards,

Nick

If the core audio has changed it may explain a step change that I heard recently, can't really say if it coincided with Yosemite implementation , but that is likely.

Not expecting any sonic changes with Yosemite, I was staggered at how much better my ripped CD's  sounded (and still do) following its installation.

Some people have suggested that the effect is also due to a digital 'sweep-out' of clutter with a new OS, and the CPU running more efficiently.

Dunno; but it sure as heck sounds better - running straight iTunes.

I use Audirvana, JRiver and BitPerfect in Yosemite.

IMO, I would say the best sounding for direct USB connection to a DAC is Audirvana (I use it in iTunes mode). BitPerfect comes second, but is little configurable so it won't fit all settings. I started with BitPerfect and switched to Audirvana. JRiver is largely the most flexible and configurable and has the best UI but doesn't sound as well as the other two in direct USB connection to a DAC. I use it's upnp media server to stream music to my ND5XS and -for that- is great.
