Error connecting to Spotify

Posted by: Arthur Geraerts on 16 December 2014

Seems I was a bit too excited about the new Spotify feature on my UQ2. It worked great for two days but now my UQ2 says it can't connect to spotify although my internet connection is fine (it plays Internet radio and my iPhone can play Spotify just fine).

Anything I can do about this? Or just wait some more?

FWIW my brother and I could not get much luck out of spotify yesterday, I think they were getting hammered pretty hard.

I had a couple of very brief dropouts on Qobuz yesterday when no one else was using the broadband. I suspect the Internet core peering points were getting rather loaded yesterday. Of course as streaming becomes more adopted (both video and audio for consumers) we might see infrastructure capacity  problems until upgrades are put in place from time to time.

I know in the UK the busiest Internet core loading times have been around 4pm when school children appear to bombard social media... but holiday period loading might be different.

Just done some sequenced trace routes and compared with Qobuz and Spotify (from BT East Anglia). The Spotify path has more ICMP drops from the routers in its path than Qobuz. With Qobuz there are occasional blips of drops, where as with Spotify there are fairly consistent drops. Now ICMP drops used in Trace Route doesn't imply TCP traffic is neccessarily being dropped but it is a reasonable indication of it happening and of core load.

Note the drops I saw were in the Internet core and not at the remote ends. Also TCP is designed to cater for dropped packets within reason.

That's useful to know Simon. My dropouts were brief and intermittent too so perhaps not my network set up.

I've just noticed I can up my broadband speed to 50mb from 30mb free of charge so have put in that request.

Will investigate a switch tomorrow.

All that has been said is about drop outs my concern was even being able to get on to the app for the unit when it was ok playing on my iPad.

i looked into this further as I was hearing others nothing to do with Naim were having Spotify connection problems recently. And it does appear Spotify have been having problems, or the routes to Spotify have been having problems. This following site tracks social media reported issues on failed service. Anything above the red line suggests an issue.

I have decided to leave the system on from now, doing this has made it easier to find a connection.

So far this has worked for me and it will stay this way.

The problem is/was with Naim, because everything worked once I resetted the system.

Arthur great, however a few  have been having issues with Spotify over the holiday period. So if one gets issues or dropouts again, might be worthwhile checking the link, before one goes around resetting everything.
