Trying to update the firmware on my unitilite with a macbook air running Yosemite but unable to get the USB serial port drivers to work - it says successfully installed but when i run the updater no USB com port appears.

Anyone else having the same problem - any ideas how to fix or should i just borrow a pc from someone !?

I always do mine with a Windows laptop even though I own a Macbook too.

But just in case . . . when everything is connected, within the updater window you see a little window (actually a drop-down menu) where the ports are listed.  At the start of the process, that menu is blank!  But I can use the drop down list and pick a port to use.  If you pick one that does not work, go onto the next.  For me for some reason it's always Port 6, which is the last of the ports I usually see listed.

But if the pull-down menu is totally devoid of ports, then something is amiss.

If you don't care about spotify, I wouldn't do the upgrade. Change in sound on the NDX was disappointing. I won't be upgrading my NDS.

MM that is rubbish,  the f/w does not change the sound.

There was a big improvement last time around from the previous firmware. :-)

Interestingly, I spoke with Naim Audio Support this afternoon (regarding the files needed to update my NS01 - actually both the UnitiServe and HDX files are the same) and was told just that: if you're unlikely to be using Spotify there is no reason to update the NDS. And that means that I don't have to move on from nStream. Phew!

Hi I updated my 172 using an Air. I followed the instructions, but also had to restart my Mac a time or two to get the driver route to show in 'about my MAC' (details in the instruction on how to update show where to access this). Once all showing update was easy and painless.

rodred, I have the same setup, Yosemite and "air" I installed the USB drivers and when I ran the updater the drop down menu gave me a bluetooth usb driver and the correct driver. Can't help much but advise that it "should" work.

Clive,

That's an interesting remark from Naim and not in line with what they normally recommend.  I even recall reading somewhere (very recently) that they recommend installing all Firmware upgrades to ensure the best functionality.

it is also usually the case that if they subsequently release another update that it is written to update from the last version; which would mean you would have to be running that before you could apply the latest one.

As an aside, I have done the update on my NDS for the reason just stated but have no real interest in Spotify at this time.  I also still use NStream!

That is interesting, Ian. I am just going to attempt the NS01 update now. If that works I might just be brave enough to have a go at the NDS. in fact I've already got an old laptop ready fired up just in case (I have to fire it up well in advance because it is so desperately slow!)

It sounds more attractive if I can still use nStream.

The new firmware has numerous improvements over the old one, whether you want to use Spotify or not. The standard advice is to upgrade.

That's what I thought too, Nigel, but what I report above is what I was told. God's truth guv.

I guess if Naim are faced with someone who doesn't want to upgrade, they'll tell you you don't have to. Your system will work as well as it does now, just not as well as it could, that's all.

Clive,

I believe you!  However, HH speaks the truth, which is why I found the comment you received from HQ a little puzzling; it most definitely goes against the grain.

But yes, the firmware upgrade does not require you to stop using nStream.

Good luck!

Ian

Ps.  I know what you mean regards the slow laptop; I sometimes think I should switch mine on the day before I actually need it!

Ok - Don't know whether the cable dressing changed, but something surely did - and it doesn't sound the same anymore.

Well there was a DSP update so it is possible.

I've been beta testing all the f/w revs since 3.22 & there was no change in DSP #

Posted on: 18 December 2014 by Bananahead

I'm not saying that there was a change. Just that the DSP code got flashed so it is possible that there was.

Posted on: 18 December 2014 by Mike-B

I would agree if the rev code changed,  but it didn't

I asked Naim if they could make my SuperUniti sound as good as an NDS as part of the firmware upgrade and they replied that there would be no impact on sound quality. None. Not even a little teensy weensy change.

Posted on: 18 December 2014 by Bananahead

Which is no guarantee at all because it doesn't include the build number - assuming that they are perfect in updating that anyway.

The firmware is 4.1.00 but if you look at the install app it is 4.1.3 (with what looks like a build number in brackets).

Anyway, it sounds the same to me

Hi,

I have an NDX (24/196) with a mini USB port for Upgrade.

Reading the PDF it says

NaimUniti, UnitiQute, NDX

Requires 9 pin to 9 pin RS232 serial cable (or USB to Serial converter - ones with FTDI or Prolific drivers are suggested. An example of which is available here:

SuperUniti, ND5 XS, NaimUniti 2, NAC-N 172-XS, NDS, UnitiQute2, UnitiLite

Requires mini USB port – requires USB B to USB mini cable. Driver link below:

As my NDX has MINI USB port and not a RS232 I can't understand which cable do I need for upgrade my NDX with my mac book pro (which doesn't have any RS232 port)

Can I use the normal USB cable that I have which fits perfectly in my NDX?

Lorenzo

Lorenzo   you need a USB-2 Type A to Mini-B cable

The Mini-B fits into a port on the rear of NDX

It will not work with a cable in the front USB port

Posted on: 18 December 2014 by LCV

Thank-you Mike!

I felt it should be as you say but reading the PDF confused me as for the NDX it gives only the possibility to use a RS232 or USB to RS232 cable.

They forgot to mention that late NDX have the MINI B USB (on there rear of course!)

But I still have a problem.

I connected my NDX to my MAC BOOK PRO with the correct USB cable but when I am asked to select the port I only see a BLU TOOTH INCOMING PORT.

What should I do?

I downloaded the driver and now it's upgrading!

Thanks - I can't seem to get it to show in about my mac so have borrowed a windows laptop !

Update worked a treat & must say spotify connect seems a much better solution than using spotify via my iPhone to an airport express - well done Naim - great update !
