Streamer Updater

Posted by: rodred on 17 December 2014

Trying to update the firmware on my unitilite with a macbook air running Yosemite but unable to get the USB serial port drivers to work - it says successfully installed but when i run the updater no USB com port appears.

Anyone else having the same problem - any ideas how to fix or should i just borrow a pc from someone !?

Having exactly the same problem - out of interest, what driver did you install to get it to work?

It seems I managed to brick my ND5XS with this update. I've dropped Naim a note about it, but I'm not holding my breath for a quick response this time of the year. =/

Please try reinstalling. It's really hard to brick a naim player. Follow all instructions and give it another go.

It was quite easy in this instance.

It now states it needs a firmware and it doesn`t get an IP address (it literally shows 0.0.0.0 on the display), and as such the updater finds the device through the USB port but cannot connect to it through the network (why that would be required is beyond me).

It basically locked itself in a "Streamer update -- please wait" message in the middle of the process and no amount of retrying would get it back. The updater went through two cycles while stating it couldn't find the device, at which point I gave up, turned everything off and now it gets to the state I described in the previous paragraph.

By the way, I followed all instructions to the letter - it didn`t seem to have gone through initially (it showed 99% and Success) but then got in the state I described above.

Do you have a wired Ethernet connection, or were you updating with wifi? I once had a similar scary problem with no ability to get an IP address, powered off the naim, exited from the updater app, plugged in a long Ethernet cable, powered up the naim, re-launched the updater with fingers crossed and it worked...I think having the live wired connection at power up / discovery made the difference. Worth a try if you can. Also may be worth it to revert to 3.22 first then re-update (recall that Phil has confirmed the s/w development team said there is no harm to downgrade...and you may benefit from using the previous version if a fresh wired trial of 4.1 doesn't sort you out). Best wishes.

Alan,

Phil's advice is detailed below. Note his comment that a factory reset must be done if going back to previous firmware.

The guys are working on a proper fix here in the meantime...

I managed to get it accessible again by using wireless, which meant it now has an IP address. I left my default wires connection live anyway.

It's updating again now, so let's see...

Now it went through and I'm back in the game!

I just have to find a way of getting the ND5XS to show up in Spotify Connect on my iPhone...

Is the input turned on in your ndx5xs menu?

I'm glad to hear of your failure . . . . failure to brick it, that is.

Yes the upgrade process uses layer 2 ethernet network, discovery techniques whe updating the streamer board. Wifi implementations don't always respond well or reliably to ethernet discovery techniques, as they are not ethernet.... Therefore this is why Naim recommend a wired connection. I spotted this on an early beta programme, and ever since Naim have recommended the wired connection. At the tIme I was using a Cisco wifi implementation that was failing. But glad you got it working.

Simon, I did it over the wired connection at first (which is what I always use). I had to use WiFi to resurrect the thing because it was not being assigned an IP via the wired connection for whatever reason.

Yes - it shows up eventually, it's just finicky.

All working on my Unitilite now, Spotify playing via n-stream, likewise very happy with the result. Encountered two silly issues getting it working though:

1. Naim streamer updater wouldn't show the USB port on my Macbook Pro, only Bluetooth incoming, even after downloading the driver. After lots of messing about I realised the correct sequence is to connect the Naim device to the Macbook and then download (and install!) the driver. Once I'd done that it found the port straight away and the update worked a treat.

2. After update i could see and open Spotify but couldn't get it to play back, despite having a Premium account and being signed into the app on my iPhone. The Unitilite just showed "Ready Connect Spotify app". Easiest work-around in the end - just needed to hit the speaker icon in Spotify and then all was fixed.

Great

AFIK "hitting the speaker icon" is SOP, it gives you the choice of which equipment  plays Spotify.

Indeed - no speaker, no sound.

I had the same issue with the 'speaker' icon...should have mentioned it...

(read another thread that pointed me in the right direction)

Currently enjoying the 7 day trial, then will likely sign-up...
