UPnP settings - apparent issue

I am not sure whether this has been addressed elsewhere in the forums but I stubbled across a possible issue with the UPnp settings on my Naim Uniti.

I was chatting to a friend who said, despite downloading some 192k 24bit recordings they were playing through their HDX at 44.4/16bit! I had a look and sure enough that was the case with the maximum rate being only 98k (?).

After a bit of fiddling with nServe I came across the Transcoding menu in Miscellaneous settings section of the UPnP Settings menu. This was set to Native which I changed to Decode which intimated was the correct setting.

Low and behold, when I played tracks the data indicated they were being streamed at there right rate.

This made me wonder whether the HDX and Uniti with 192k DACS actually stream at that rate.

Does anyone know the definitive answer to this? Is the music being streamed correctly even if the data displayed suggests not? As far as I know, the original setting (Native) has been that way since I bought the Uniti and it's possible that it has not been streaming at its full potential. Suggestions and info gratefully received and, of course, if I am right then I hope what I have found is helpful.

That's the way it works. You need to set it to decode to get the full resolution. It states this somewhere in the DTC or its instruction manual. The other transcoding setting, as you have found, limits the resolution.

I'm assuming that by 'Uniti' you actually mean UnitiServe.

Thanks for that. In fact I don't remember reading it, hence my surprise at discovering the issue.

My friend, who isn't technical was mystified and I suspect a good many users are not getting the best from their black boxes too.

Given that, at the time, I paid extra for the 192k version and the aspiration promised by that, I would have thought more prominence would have been given to this setting. It does seem odd also that Naim would, in effect, throttle down performance out of the box as it were.

Anyway, it's sorted and reassuring to sort it.

And yes, I did mean the UnitiServe - apologies for the misquote.

Anyway, it's sorted and reassuring to sort it albeit at this late stage.
