'Fettling' & do we need some new words?

'Fettling my LP12' is a phrase often used by forumites...but can you fettle an NDS? I think not.
Do we need some new words in a world of digitalia?

Graeme,
The performance of an LP12 is directly related to skill of the operator in manually adjusting all the components for it to work at an optimum level, hence the term 'fettling' has been ascribed to this process. With electronic components the only 'fettling' that can be done out of the factory is placement and cable dressing as there are no components to adjust manually. Therefore no term is necessary as there is nothing to describe.

'Tweaking' is what comes to my mind for this.

Hacking ?
For instance - with custom firmware, I can control my Humax PVR from a browser.
Or if you have an old dot matrix printer you could try this

Or some old floppy drives

Hacking doesn't sound right, but then again, to me, fettling hifi equipment doesn't sound right.
As far as I'm concerned, fettling involves an angle grinder and a lot of sparks.
"Ferrite"-ing ?
Draft Verb suggestion: I was futilising with my digital HiFi in a vain attempt to improve it?
Embellishing
Bit Mopping?
"Deluding"?
