Is downgrade from 4.1 possible?
Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 21 December 2014
Hi does anyone know whether I can downgrade 4.1 back to the earlier 3.2 firmware?
I realize I would loose Spotify, but the NDX SPDIF output bug on 4.1 is starting to get in the way.. by often causing frustration when for no apparent reason nothing streams to the connected DAC.
Reading this form this appears to be affecting other NDX users into the NDAC and Hugo as well.
i am advised this bug is probably known about and a fix is on its way, but I suspect unlikely before Christmas and New Year, and I would like to reliably enjoy my Naim this holiday season... If at all possible..

Should be possible. I downgraded my Uniti2 to 3.22 after a failed upgrade.
Yes its still on the Naim www, both 3.22 & 4.1
Thanks both.. I am a bit of a coward on this given time of year... Has anyone actually done the downgrade. Not sure I want to be first on this.
Simon
I would send Phil an email to be sure.
Is this because of the Hugo problem ??? if so an email will also serve to add a highlite to the problem & maybe some hurry-up grease will be applied
I suffer from this too and Phil is aware. To be honest, it's not bothering me much as I'm now in the swing of queuing an album, clearing the queue straight away and re-starting it.
I'm way too chicken to downgrade anyway!

And if I understand how the updater works, it should still be on your PC. (But I've not downloaded 4.1 yet (still running the beta) and so I can't be sure that the current updater didn't wipe off previous versions, from your pc folders, but my guess is that it did not.)
Reading the words about the 4.1 NAIM say that it can't be downgraded!
In the file "TN-0029 Naim Streaming Products Update - Version 4.1 PC.pdf" it says quite categorically and I quote "After upgrading to 4.1, do not attempt to downgrade to a previous version. " And what's more that sentence is printed in Red in that document too.

Oo err !!! Good spot Big Bill
I have just ordered a 10m Ethernet cable to enable me to connect from the network switch in the study to a laptop in the music room which will be connected to the NDS by USB cable (last time I relied on a wifi connection to update to 3.22). But having read this thread, and given that it was started by SinS whom I regard as much more IT aware than me, I think I might just hold off on the update to 4.1 until we get some words of wisdom from HQ.
Feeling happy right now that I hadn't felt brave enough to attempt the update on wifi!
This issue only seems to affect external DAC users. If you're just using the NDS there should be no issues.

Thanks, Gary. I realised that as I was typing, but somehow I still feel safe, if not smug(!!), that I haven't yet applied the update.

Thank you Bill; when all else fails, RTFDocument remains sound advice!
Indeed, thank you Bill for confirming this.. I should have read the manual/release note.. shame on me.
So please Naim can you release the new firmware shortly, if even just beta .. Please....

I feel naim need review their software team.

Naim is far to be a "sell and forget" company, as we are sometime accustomed with low quality Far East countries production.
upgrades are very common today to present problems because costumers and sales want to speed up the process.
the difference here is that the software team have costumer feedbak in great consideration especially when reproducible problems are reported, like this one, and I think is interest of all to get it fixed soon.
sometimes I think we need more to review our approach on costumer side... Software is the closest real example of human fallibility nowadays.

Considering your zero contribution to any posts on the soft & firmware changes, you have no right to make such a post.

That is a really, really, stupid comment, of which you should be ashamed. I was part of the beta testing team and we worked very closely with Naim. Those working on the developments were posting at all hours of the evening, and at weekends, in order to get the upgraded firmware and apps, and then they get someone behaving like an arse coming on here and saying they should lose their jobs. Shame on you.
It is regrettable that this defect was not picked up in testing. From memory, everyone testing was using their streamer direct into their amplifier, or, like me, use an all-in-one box. Clearly the beta testing needs to include the digital output in future. Regression testing is aimed at ensuring changes yo not have negative impacts on existing functionality, but it seems that this one got missed. It's annoying for some, of course, and will get picked up going forward, I'm sure.

Morning all,
Simon, Bill is right in saying you shouldn't downgrade the firmware, thanks for jumping in on that one Bill.
Regarding the "SPDIF bug", I've not heard of this one yet. Have you sent details to support@naimaudio.com? If not could you mail them specifics and copy me in please or post here, whichever is most convenient.
Tom
Phil is aware. He even had me checl the Optical output on my NDX. Cough
Tom, I will post the details here for clarity, but I have been contacted off forum by other forum members advising me this issue has most likely already been identified and I should wait for a new firmware that may or may not be development/test.. But I have been requested not to say too much in open forum.
Post to follow.
Simon
Tom,
Equipment: NDX running firmware 4.1, set to exclusive SPDIF output mode.
After a sequnce of play list items completes a subsequent request to stream new media occasionally results in no SPDIF being streamed. However the ND player indicates its playing the media, and the progress bar on the Naim app moves forward.
Changing input or selecting media with a different sample rate always clears it.. Sometimes selecting new media with the same sample rate clears it.
This behaviour can't be reliably repeated, that is it is not deterministic.
Tom, you should have my email, as I had offered to support your beta programme but you had already received enough volunteers at that time.. So feel free to contact me if you need more info.
Simon
Guys,
Please don't attempt to revert from 4.1 to 3.22 - you should *NEVER* go back versions (and it is in the documentation too).
The guys at this end are looking into the issue and I'll let you know when I have any more information for you.
Thanks
Phil

Yeah yeah - OK - it was a busy day and I had you mixed up with a guy with an *H*DX S/PDIF issue too (and that does have an optical out)...
Cheers
Phil
Phil, thanks. I have also dropped an email into support at Tom's suggestion just in case you would like any more info. It goes hopefully without saying I'd be more than pleased to help you iron this out If I can.
