Is downgrade from 4.1 possible?

Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 21 December 2014

Hi does anyone know whether I can downgrade 4.1 back to the earlier 3.2 firmware?

I realize I would loose Spotify, but the NDX SPDIF output bug on 4.1 is starting to get in the way.. by often causing frustration when for no apparent reason nothing streams to the connected DAC.

Reading this form this appears to be affecting other  NDX users into the NDAC and Hugo as well.

i am advised this bug is probably known about and a fix is on its way, but I suspect unlikely before Christmas and New Year, and I would like to reliably enjoy my Naim this holiday season... If at all possible..

Presumably re-installing 4.1 is ok? Spotify worked on my NDS for the first couple of days but since then I get an error message that 'can't connect to Spotify server'. I'm thinking that a re-install of 4.1 might act as a reset of Spoitfy in case something has got corrupted. Everything else works fine so I am wary.

There's no issue reinstalling the 4.1 update but I very much doubt that it will resolve your issue - especially as it *WAS* working but now isn't. (This would imply that somehow your NDS has managed to scramble its firmware in a very well behaved way which is highly unlikely...)

Has anything else changed on your network..?

Hi Phil, no nothing changed on network, it just stopped working and came up with the error message on Spotify input. All other functions worked before and after (never had an issue with UPnP) and internet and network devices all are ok as previously (using Apple router and Virgin box in modem only mode).

Hi John,

Dumb question but you do still have a Spotify Premium account, yes? You haven't changed your login password for your Spotify Premium account? Have you tried doing a Factory Reset on your NDS?

Grabbing at straws a little on this one because the Spotify Premium code we use in the streamers was (on the whole) supplied to us by Spotify and so we don't really have a lot that we can do or diagnose there ... if your tablets are connecting then your NDS should too but perhaps if there's been a change in your account details then maybe the link between the device and the account has become messed up in some way that Spotify aren't handling nicely?

Thanks for the reply Phil. You maybe on to something here as I have had an issue with my Premium sub for the last few days. When I first downloaded the App, I signed up for the free 7 day trial of Premium. All worked fine including the NDS. A couple of days later I decided to subscribe long term and did this as an Apple monthly renewable sub at £12.99/month. The problem I have had is that this sub has never been applied to my account and the Premium version I have is still the 7 day trial, which expired today. Thinking about it, I probably lost the NDS connection to Spotify around the time I subscribed to Premium through Apple. I have been in contact with Spotify support who have confirmed that my Apple sub has not been applied to my account but also cannot trace it elsewhere. In summary my Apple Premium sub has disappeared into a black hole and Apple have today agreed to refund. As I think you are suggesting, maybe the problem with the sub has somehow confused the NDS Spotify set -up. Having now been credited for the Apple sub I intend to upgrade to Premium directly with Spotify but I think I need to clear the error message on the NDS first, so a question please....

Would a factory reset or re-installing 4.1 be the best option to try? I am happy with installing 4.1, less so with a reset as I am not clear what I would need to do to to get everything up and running again and what might I lose?

Thanks for your time on this matter.

Hi,

...as I've already posted previously, the guys at this end are looking into the issue and I'll let you know when I have any more information for you.

Thanks

Hi John,

As per my previous reply, there's *NO* mileage as far as I can see in reinstalling 4.1 - there's no indication here that there is any corruption to the NDS in any way.

A factory reset will wipe all the settings on the NDS back to factory defaults so will wipe your WiFi settings (if you are using WiFi), your radio presets and your settings made on the Tools menus but won't harm anything.

I think the issue is likely to be your Spotify account no longer being 'Premium'...

If you press "STOP" on the remote then it *SHOULD* re-enable the S/PDIF output ...

Phil, I have been on Premium since I downloaded the Spotify App, firstly the 7 day trial and from today I have subscribed. However still have the error message on the NDS.

I will try the factory reset but not until the Near Year bearing in mind i might need dealer support if I cannot set up again. Thanks again for your help.

I can confirm pressing stop on my NDX remote then play allowed the NDX to play via SPDIF again.

Hi John,

Doing a factory reset on your NDS will not damage it in any way - it will just delete your WiFi settings (if you are using WiFI to connect it to your network which I hope you aren't) and your radio presets.

Cheers

Phil not to derail . . . but to derail . . . I just wanted to confirm whether that with the way 4.1 installs, it won't overwrite the DSP version those of us who experienced the Fault 36 issue (NDS) seem to need to prevent it.  I ask in light of the 'no going back' nature of 4.1.  I'm happy to stick with the beta version for now if necessary, as that one I was able to get to install the DSP files I needed simply by adding the DSP folder to the installer folder.  I do not want to monkey around with 4.1 unless given explicit instructions from you

4.1 should not overwrite the DSP code in your unit if you are running the updated DSP code to work around the Fault 36 issue.

Hi,

If you are having issues with the S/PDIF output on your unit on 4.1 and don't want to hit 'STOP' to re-enable it then our software guys have confirmed to me that you *CAN* downgrade to 3.22 without damaging your unit *AS LONG AS YOU ENSURE YOU DO A FACTORY RESET AFTERWARDS*.

The guys are working on a proper fix here in the meantime...

Phil, thanks for the update. The remote control 'stop/start' workaround indeed seems to work every time so I'll stick with that until the new firmware arrives - especially as we are enjoying the Spotify Connect feature with the kids this holiday period.

Merry Christmas to you and the team.. And fellow forum members.

Hello all,

As I work in software, I do understand how such defects sometimes get through, in spite of every best endeavor, but I would just like to register myself as another NDX/DAC user who would appreciate a fix as soon as possible. Please ;-)

Phil, just to let you know that I have now done the factory reset and this re-established my Spotify connection so all is ok now. Took minutes to reset the radio presets and other than enabling system automation nothing else needed changing.

Phil,

Interesting (maybe) observation.

My NDX has stopped having issues with resuming playback after the previous queue emptied.

Any chance there is a playlist / queue history bug at work and when the history is sufficiently long we don't bump into the bug.

It would be a real corner case as QA may have fired up a test playlist with enough tracks to miss the bug.

Ron

Cheers Ron,

I've let the software guys know in case there's anything they want me to get from you...
