D'Angelo - the TRIUMPHANT return!

Posted by: glevethan on 21 December 2014

I am not sure that this may appeal to many on the forum however last week legendary RnB icon D'Angelo surprised the world with the unannounced release of his 3rd album - 15 years to the date after his last effort.  By the first day it was number one on more than 25 different international iTunes stores.

With such high expectations, and so many years between releases, people were not sure what to expect.  What D'Angelo delivered is a RnB masterpiece, an album which people will be speaking about a decade from now.  It is already being spoken in the same breath as Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Sylvester Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On.

The inside joke is that the clakety clakety sound we are hearing is that of critics ripping up their best of the year lists and furiously typing up new ones to include this masterpiece.

For further information just google the web.  A nice in depth thread can be found on the Steve Hoffman forum - I do not want to post the link due to forum rules.

And what do I think of the album (not that it matters) - 5 star - easily!  Maybe even 6******

Best

Gregg

PS  all recorded to analogue tape - and musicians playing REAL instruments.  The band includes QuestLove (The Roots) - legendary bassist Pino Palladino (a monstrous performance) - James Gadson  (google him) and Kendra Foster (George Clinton/Parliament Funkadelic)

Hello Gregg,

Thanks for the info, I completely missed this release. I don't listen to as much RnB as I once did but given your 6-star rating, I think I need to have a listen!

Regards,

Arun

Gregg,

ordered the CD  for my daughter as a stocking filler after your email the other week.

She is a massive R&B fan.

I will rip it when she opens it and see what all the fuss is about.

I have just pre-ordered the vinyl just in case I like it.

Thanks for the heads up Gregg.

Pino's bass was massive on Voodoo, really looking forward to hearing this one.

Kinda wished he never returned, what a mess of an album! Sounded like there a re 2 tracks playing at a the same time.

It would make a great instrumental album, sub Prince "singing".

Some great music going on underneath, Pino Pallidino is a really great bassist, seen him with half the Who a couple of times.

Sugar Daddy was OK not much vocalisation.

As you may have noticed it's not really my sort of stuff the almost compulsory RnB click track of "clapping" is 'king annoying.

I listen to ALL types of music. I approached this one with an open mind but just don't get it.

If it were food it would be a mixed salad made from soggy leftover vegetables with lumpy brown gravy poured all over it served by a large, unshaven, bare chested, gold-toothed, sweaty gangsta dude with a bulge in his leather pants. And it would get a *** Michelin rating?

Sounds like a politically correct comment

I was concerned the leather pants might offend certain groups so I had it edited by a focus group first. They told me as long as I stuck with leather ''pants'' and not leather ''chaps'' I should be OK.

I had a listen to the AutoRip this morning and have canceled the vinyl.

It really doesn't float my boat at all.

I'm lucky as my girls have outgrown them- thank god.

They were actually just on a famous late night comedy show over here - Saturday Night Live. The only thing I kept on saying is that I hope they banked a lot of money while they still could (and Simon Cowell left them some)!  I think they are now in the other side of the mountain- heading in the downward direction.

They have amassed well over 15 million squid each so will be ok when they call it a day.

Not my cup of tea but they all have good voices so will do some solo stuff and make even more cash.

Simon has a new cash cow ready for 2015.

There are 8/9 of em in this boy band line up.$$$$$$$$$$$£££££££££££

Gregg,

You need to listen to the Craig Charles Funk and Soul show on  live or on 6 music player.

Tonight he has been playing some of your all time favourites.

Three hours worth of Great women classics inc the great Ann Peebles.
