HDX software update help

Posted by: BigO on 27 December 2014

I see that there has been a software update for both HDX and the DTC. I have downloaded both and updated the DTC no problem but am getting a bit stuck on the HDX update. The download file is a zip from which i have created an .iso file using ImageBurn. This creates two files : HDX V1.7b update.iso and .mds. I have burnt these both to a CD (CD-R) twice but both times the HDX has spun for about 10 seconds and then chucked out the CD. the software version on the HDX remains at 1.7a. I have found these HDX updates a bit traumatic in the past - what am I doing wrong??

You are making it far more complicated than it needs to be. Assuming you have windows 7 or above, right click the iso file you download and burn to disk.

Windows has this functionality built in.

I'll try it again but that is exactly what I did - "you have files waiting to be burnt to the disc". Do I need both the iso and the mds files burnt to disc?

It sounds like you are trying to update using the iso file, rather than the files within the iso file.

When you dowlOad the iso, it should contain hdx files, and it is these files that need burning to disk, not the iso, itself

CBR, thats quite wrong.

Windows will create a disk from the ISO, thats exactly what an ISO is for.

I am not infront of a windows machine right now, but its very straight forward, right click the iso and burn it. I don't use it often but I don't remember many steps but its just the iso you want. OSC works the same way, right click and burn to disk

Garyi,

Thats my experience, where i copied the actual iso and had this problem.

Ended up having naim remote support run though the download to get the correct files burnt to disk. Depends which software is used to burn the disk, can have different results

You need to extract the ISO files before burning the disc. As Gary says, Windows has the functionality built in. It sounds like you are copying the zip file to the disc, which as you have found, will not work.

No I am definitely not trying to burn the zip files to the disc. I shall give it another go but you end up going through several CDs just to get these updates to work! But is it just the iso file or is the other mds file required as well?

I dont get what you are asking, if you follow the very simple procedure outlined, then this will not even be an option, it should burn the ISO to disk.

Just look at an iso as a facsimile of a CD. All you are doing is printing that facsimile back to a disk, in this instance its naims ISO, there should be no options persay, it should just burn the ISO.

I don't have a PC in front of me to check.

I t burns the iso to the CD OK and this can be checked on the disk. But when you load it into the tray it spinsup and spews it out after 10 seconds!

I have no further advice for you sorry. Burning iso's *should* be easy. But lets face it with windows all bets are off, depends what the outside temperature is like and how you are looking at it at any given moment.

Well thanks anyway - I shall have to keep on trying until I run out of CD's!

Back in the day I used 'magic iso' to good effect, could be worth a go.

I am just about to try ImageBurn to see what results.

Although I don't have an HDX, I thought I'd download the update and have a look.

The upgrade zip file contains the iso file (itself a type of archiving file just like a zip or rar file) plus the pdf instruction files. Opening the iso file with winrar there are 2 folders: one named Naim Desktop Client which contains the setup.exe file and the Naim_DesktopClient_setup.msi file plus the other named upgrade which contains 5 zip files one of which is named NSHDX_Upgrade_v1.7b.zip which has the individual upgrade software files. The iso also contains further copies of the pdf instruction files.

So, as far as I can see you only need to burn the main iso file and nothing else to a blank CD and the HDX should read the setup.exe files and extract the upgrade software files from their zip folder.

I have downloaded the file again as a zip file. If I open the file there is no sign of any pdf instruction files. If I try and extract using Zip Genius 6 there is a Checksum error in the AMG database!

The file you download should be RS2402_1.7b Hard Disk Player Server Update.zip from here

https://www.naimaudio.com/updates

Is that what you have? You should be able to extract the files using 7zip or winrar.

Please note: the hard disk player/server must already be on version 1.7a before updating

Yes that is what I have.

I have saved this to a folder which has the option to Burn. Do I just burn this whole zip file from Win 7 direct onto the disc or do I need to create an iso file, or do I need to extract the zip file first somewhere, create an iso file and burn this. It might help if Naim actually gave some introductions on these updates!

In the file properties the file is shown as 73.2 MB (76,766,971 bytes). Is yours the same? If not your file may have been corrupted so if you haven't got your original version it may be worth redownloading.

You might also want to try using 7zip or winrar to open/extract the zip file.

Not sure what the error message means. AMG is All Media Guide so perhaps your unzip software is checking the files to match against a media (music/video) database.

The RS2402_1.7b Hard Disk Player Server Update.zip file contains the 1.7b Update.iso file. Extract this iso file from the zip file and then you can use Imgburn option "Write Image File to Disc" to burn the 1.7b Update.iso file to your CD.

I have just re downloaded the file and it is showing only 39MB so that might explain a few things. That is useful info so I know at least the size of file I need. Neither of the updates from either the Connections or the Updates pages is working for me, with either Chrome or IE.

Do I need to extract first and create an iso file before burning to a CD?

Posted on: 27 December 2014 by sjbabbey

No. As I said above the zip file contains the update iso file so you don't need to create one. You need to unzip the RS2402_1.7b Hard Disk Player Server Update.zip file and use the 1.7b Update.iso file and burn this directly to a CD as per my previous instruction.

Thanks. I shall give this a go when I can download from Naim. It looks like their server has gone down as it will will not send any data on the download links.

Posted on: 27 December 2014 by BigO

I thought it might be worth posting an update. The Antivirus on my pc allowed me to only download 39MB of the file when in fact the whole file is just over 73MB. By turning off the active shields, firewall etc I have downloaded the whole file. This shows now the iso file to burn direct to the CD plus the pdf instructions. For anyone else who struggles with this (unless it is only me!) note the AV can stop part of the download without you realising it. I am going to have another go as it is my last CD.

As much to anyone else who may experience issues with this upgrade, I used image burn to write the image file to disc, but instead of using a cd (as I had run out), I used a dvd+Rwanda to burn to. I can report that the hdx has now updated to v1.7b and all appears to be working ok.
