Spotify Connect Multiroom

Posted by: Ali Mustafa Korkmaz on 28 December 2014

why you can not connect spotify with more than a streamer? I want to use NaimUniti and muso as multiroom. At the time, I can only select one of them. At the same time both will not work.

thank you

I woud argue that is a limitation of spotify.

This has been confirmed as a Spotify licensing requirement. Hopefully Spotify will change their stance on this as more manufactures with multi room systems use Connect.

Can you help me understand if it's a Spotify licensing issue, why multiroom with concurrent or independant play out using multiple devices using Spotify on Sonos is possible?

Simon, it is not possible to have two devices playing live on one Spotify account, although you can have several working in offline mode whilst one is working live.  It is a long held frustration for those of us who have had Spotify for a long time and who would like to use it on multiple machines for different members of the family.  They have recently been advertising family membership with two family members on one account for £15 and 3 for £20 but I'd not sure if each has their own sign on details or if they share.

indeed you are tight - just tried it on Spotfy - and I get a pop up on one of Spotify clients after about 10 secs of independent playout on the same account - saying playback paused because my account is being used elsewhere.

I must have been using Qobuz before - and looking through - I think Im right that they allow unto 3 devices to concurrently play out on a single account - and you authorise  those devices on your Qobuz account portal.

Are you positive about that? We have a single user Premium account at home and I am almost sure that whilst my daughter has been listening to Spotify in her bedroom via a (Sonos) Play:1, I was listening to something else in mine via a Play:5 and neither paused to tell me that I was using Spotify somewhere else. (I have not tried Spotify via Sonos AND Spotify Connect on Naim though)

Well, all I can say is what I did. I played out Spotify via Spotify Connect on my iPad, playing out on the iPad. I then set my Sonos to play Spotify on my same account, and a pop up appeared after a few seconds on the iPad to say Spotify playback is paused, as the account is being used on another device. The Spotify on Sonos carried on playing.

With Qobuz I don't get these restrictions, at least not to the same extent. I have not tried concurrent playout on Deezer yet.

I think you're right...

1. Concurrently playing Spotify (same account) via Spotify Connect (e.g. on a Uniti) and  Spotify via a Sonos player: Not possible

2. Concurrently playing Spotify (same account) on iphone and Spotify on a computer: Not possible

3. But... concurrently playing Spotify (same account) on a Play:X (e.g. Banarama's Venus via Spotify on Play5 AND Sepultura's Roots Bloody Roots on a Play1) is possible... I think
