4.1 Upgrade for ND5 XS
Posted by: Karen on 30 December 2014
The ND5 XS is set up with a hardwired ethernet connection into the Apple Time Capsule and iMac. The video on upgrading is quite useful but I could use some advice. Would I need to use the USB cable since everything is hardwired? My current version is 3.17 and this would be my first attempt at upgrading. Should I start with the next upgrade or just download 4.1? Thanks for any tips and advice.
Yes, you need a USB into the back of the streamer, connected to the usb on your computer. Go straight to 4.1.

Hmmmm....that poses a problem since the computer and streamer are in separate rooms.
Take the streamer to the computer, or vice versa.
Thanks very much. First I will need to purchase the proper USB cable and then I will move the streamer to the computer. Your help is greatly appreciated!
You need a USB to USB mini B. If you have a digital camera you may well have the necessary wire, so check before you splash out.
I do have a digital camera so will check my camera bag. Thanks again.
Karen, just remember that your streamer will still need to be connected/wired into your network when you move it to connect to your computer or the updates won't be able to find it when it looks for it's network address.
Karen...My iMac is upstairs, and my Naim system is downstairs. I just picked up the iMac, took it downstairs and hard wired it (Ethernet cable) to my Sky Hub. Then as HH suggested, using my old camera USB cable, connected the iMac to the ND5 XS. The update was done in 15 minutes.
I do have an Apple AirPort Express. Would I be able to use that?

Hi Karen, I'm not familiar with this piece of equipment so perhaps others may be able to give you better advice.
But for what it's worth I'd say that if it can connect the streamer to your network then it should work. If you can connect the streamer to the AE via an ethernet cable then this would be best. If you have to connect the streamer wirelessly, then you will need to attach the wireless antenna to the ND5 and change the ND5's network settings from wired/ethernet to wireless.
The AirPort Express has an ethernet connection on the rear. I use it in the living room to boost the wi-fi signal. The Apple Time Capsule is the wi-fi base and is located in the bedroom near the iMac and the Netgear Ethernet Switch box. The cable modem is hardwired to the Time Capsule and the modem is my Internet source. The streamer in the living room is hardwired with an Ethernet cable to the Apple Time Capsule. Moving the computer to the living room may be easier than moving the streamer to the computer (more to disconnect from the streamer.)
