Gerry Mulligan and the Concert Jazz Band At The Village Vanguard

Poll Winners Records 27292

Of all the recordings made by Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band in the 1960s, this is arguably the definitive one. But on this CD release, also included, is the album “Presents A Concert In Jazz”, featuring his Concert Jazz Band recorded in a pair of 1961 studio sessions.

Recommended to lovers of modern, large group, jazz.

Excellent recording and transfers for the period.

Enjoy

Dave

Nice.

Bardo Pond, Dilate. on Tidal 16/44.1. I also have this on double LP. on tidal, this sounds very precise, but lacks the pace, and drive, of LP the version on, LP12. I'm totally stoned, with this druggy drone music after 2 bottles of lager. Staying on Tidal for the moment to listen to some of your posts.

Kevin Ayers, Bananamour

When Your Patents Go To Sleep, i just love Archie Legger's vocals, the brass sections, vocals from Doris Troy amongst others.

A great album that I keep returning to from 1973.

Richter recorded Schumann's Piano Concerto 4 times. ( as I am aware of ) and this is the very first one he made in Moscow back in 1954 ( or some record shows as early as 1948 ) with Alex Gauk.

In spite its poor fidelity, I like this version the best for sheer passion Richter shows on this early set compared to more reserved his later recordings. ( well known DG recording with Rowicki sounds restrained and held back in comparison ). I think this is more in keeping of a spirit Schumann wrote this score. Richter is unusually impassioned and all out young love. What a finale!

When I played some Mary Black earlier in the week I promised I would give this album a spin at the weekend.  Of her later albums this is probably my favourite and, like all of them, the reproduction is superb.

Superbly impassioned and vital performances of the three Brahms trios, by the Belgian Trio Talweg, in a reference quality recording.

Cheers

Piano Concerto No. 1

Schnabel's playing is mesmerising.

U2

Songs of Innocence streaming from Tidal.

I don't know if it's the higher resolution or not but I'm much less negative about it than on my first 2 listenings to the free download.

Not or quite the spent force I had consigned them to.

And I I suppose it is all about growing up in a Dublin I can vividly  remember.

Hawkwind  The Xenon Codex   on EBS label cd (1999) reissue from 1988.

has some very lush passages of music between more standard Hawkwind style numbers.

Hancock's Empyrean Isle.

This pressing has the same sort of forward natural midrange I hear from MM reissues. Looking forward to hearing how much improvements they can squeeze out of this already excellent early 70s Blue Note reissue.
