Eric Gale's 1973 debut album from Kudu Label.

Bob James as an arranger, bordering soft jazz but this gets full Van Gelder treatment.

Mendelssohn's piano concertos, with Murray Perahia and Neville Marriner. I've long found these concertos to be Mendelssohn at his most faceless and professional-yet-emotionally uninvolved, and even Perahia doesn't change that (he does wholly embrace all moments for drama, though, which give some good moments - especially in the opening movement of the second). This set comes from a 5-disc box, with sleeves in original album covers, and doesn't have the solo works that were included in CBS' first release on CD. Recorded sound is OKish, spotlighting the soloist Columbia-style, but with hints of tape wow, and the orchestra swimming behind Perahia as a result (a remastering rush job?)

Cheers,

EJ

Stenhammar's serenade is a rousing orchestral work in the spirit of Sibelius' Finlandia. One of Bis' best sounding orchestral recordings I've yet heard, so good that you'd almost not care anymore about the performance. Which is great, too.

Cheers,

EJ

Tangerine Dream ~ Cyclone (1978)

Of late I have enjoyed kicking off many weekend morning listening by playing various TD to start with. This one remastered in '95. It was somewhat controversial amongst die-hard TD fans at the time. Replacing electronic drums with real percussion and adding vocals to some tracks amongst other changes of emphasis. I like it a lot and always felt it was underrated.

The first TD album I bought back in 1980. So began my obsession. Still one of my favourites as well as Stratosfear and Encore. Pity they blanded out from mid eighties onwards. Edgar Froese RIP.

You made me remember that....

Gianluigi's playing of this last week reminded me of what an excellent album it is so I've dug it out for a spin. It's every bit as good as I remember and it reminds why I used to use it to test new kit.

Dear Kuma, I will tell you, but for the first listening is far different from Karajan and I would get time to explore that differences. But is an exemplary execution.

Posted on: 15 February 2015 by kuma

Oh yes.

His Beethoven is HUGELY different from Karajan's.

Enjoy!
