1981 release. There were a several hits from this album I remember.

This was the last LP I stopped following their music since their tunes just sound too 80s and synthetic for my taste.

Love the title tune, tho.

First impression is real musicians in a real space - more 3 dimensional. An feeling of smooth & ease to the presentation, instruments have a more natural tone & feel,  you can hear subtle variations in technique such as the emotion played into the performance. Its just one of the most natural sounding recordings I've ever heard.

You want to try and get a hold of his other album Crossing as that is just as good sonically. I have the sacd's of them both are they are up there amongst the best recordings I have ever heard.

Best sounding versions are the DCC and closely followed by the WB US original that can be bought cheaply. One of my all time favs.

“Ike Quebec's 1961-1962 comeback albums for Blue Note were all pretty rewarding, but Blue and Sentimental is his signature statement of the bunch, a superbly sensuous blend of lusty blues swagger and achingly romantic ballads”.

“Through it all, Quebec remains the quintessential seducer, striking just the right balance between sophistication and earthiness, confidence and vulnerability, joy and longing. It's enough to make Blue and Sentimental a quiet, sorely underrated masterpiece”. Review by Steve Huey, AllMusic.com

I like their earlier stronger Philly Sound influenced work.

'She's gone'  with the addictive intro is a classic.

EJ,

Sorry to be out of topic,  but are you excited about Concertgebouw's new music director?

I haven't heard from Gatti for a while (my fault - he's apparently been very busy) but yes, I expect this could work out great for the orchestra. Recordingwise, I don't expect the glory days of Chailly to return (this Mahler set has unbelievable sound quality).

Did they change the recording engineer?

Mariss Jansons also recorded the Mahler's 5 with Concertgebouw altho, I haven't heard any of his recording with the orchestra, they do not sound good?

JVC Japan pressing. A rare instance that a Japanese pressing sounding slightly better than the US pressing which has a quite noticeable treble distortion and boost.

Gianlugi,

Dave Grusin + GRP fusion music was my soundtrack of the 80s and 90s. ( I've replaced the entire collection with CDs )  JVC digital recording started in the late 70s and I still remember getting Lee Ritenour's Gentle Thoughts album back in the late 70s.

Grusin's music can sound too tame ( my mate calls it elevator music ) but I love some of his composition. His 82 release 'Out of Shadows'  is stronger than 'Mountain Dance'.

I remember GRP days. Crusaders, Diane Schuur, Diana Krall, Al Jerrau, Burton, Benson, Barbieri.............Patitucci, Larry Carlton! How so many.......i remember people going out of the shop holding records with  arms.

The last i got from that era is The Usual Suspects on double vinyl by Sheffield Lab which is extremely well recorded.

Kuma,

Completely different recording teams is my understanding. Don't have Jansons' issue but on the basis of the discs I do have, I  assume it's one of Everett Porter's discs? The live SACDs sound good and polished, but can't hide the fact that they were taped live. Decca's were all produced by Andrew Cornall in a studio setting.

Haydn's masterpiece in its most popular guise, as string quartet. This recent recording put the Cuarteto Casals on the map for me, as one of the quartets to follow.

Cheers,

On original vinyl. I remember being very disappointed with this at the time. Now I see it as the masterpiece it really is. A case of being 27 years ahead of its time.
