Alongside “Such Sweet Thunder” and “Ellington at Newport”, “Ellington Uptown” is possibly the best LP of Duke’s lengthy career. The newly reissued Masterpieces by Analogue Productions is also wonderful!

Bought it today for a fiver and  still sounding superb, actually even better on vinyl after all these years.

Saw them live what seems like an age ago. Remember not being too impressed at the time.

Never saw them live, Ewe-too young! Like the album though as the three have a lot of energy together. Not so keen on Beck's solo stuff though. He performs better as part of a band IMHO.

Fleetwood Mac ~ Men of The World (2008)

Playing CD 1 of 3

I have been totally delighted with this three CD set. Far better than I could have hoped for. Sounding superb live, in the studio or mixed. The Madge Sessions both 1 and 2 ( on CD 2) and Green Manalishi played live (on CD 3) are better than I have heard before.

Being a fan of both new and old Fleetwood Mac, you've persuaded me to order this, Steve.  Man of the World is one of those songs I've always loved, only downside is how short it is.  Anyway, as you say this 3-CD set is a bargain, though Amazon also advertises a set for nearly £400!

I'm sure you will really enjoy it MDS as you like the old 'Mac, so for less than £400 it is certainly a bargain! I ended up for no particular reason, listening to it from CD 3 (the live tracks) via CD 2 (studio) and finishing with them revisiting some blues and roots. I am already looking forward to playing  it through again next week.

Love the sound of vibes.

'57 mono. This record came from neighbours estate sale. He was a drummer and loved the big band sound.

Roy Hargrove: RH Factor 2003 Release.

Post bop with a touch of rap.

Rap is a genre I never understood. Miles sort of incorporated it in his last album, Doo Bop.

I could hear Miles influence on Hargrove. ( but then who hasn't been influenced by Miles? )

What a surprise!

This Szell/Cleveland's Tchaikovsky's 5th is expressive and well throughout. From the top, masterfully manipulated tempo makes me wonder what happens next. Suave and grown up yet reminds me of an exquisitely carved out granite statue.

Enhanced micro dynamics due to clearly organised individual instrument makes the story more interesting to listen to.

Less hot blooded than Lenny’s but it shows strong anguish and emotions running underneath at all time. Beautiful without sounding corny or trite. The finale gets a bit light weight due to lack of bass due to this late budget reissue but good tension management and textural interest keep the tune going finishing with enough gallantry. Good horn playing in the final movement. *fate* motif final chords could have been better punctuated but instead he finishes off with feather touch ‘periods’.

Agreed. My vinyl copy is flawless and sounds great, especially at high volume. If people haven't heard it it's worth tracking down.
