Last night I installed my re-tipped, rebuilt (ESC) Linn Troika and played this as a test record - astonishingly good! Now I have the tough decision of what to try next...

From the 15-LP Atlantic Jazz box set. Some great stuff on this double album, including Brubeck and Desmond's lovely "Koto Song":

A stunning performance of D940. Fray and Rouvier paint a vivid picture of Schubert's demonic abyss.

Thought I'd give this another go, on vinyl. The production and SQ are stunning, as might be expected, but this really is a curious thing. As a closer to one of the biggest and best bands of the rock era, it's weirdly low-key, some lovely moments but ultimately crying out for a bit of Waters grit. The one song, "Louder Than Words", proves that Polly Sampson is nowhere near even an adequate replacement for Mr Waters, while "Anisina" is one of the most irritatingly insipid things I have ever heard.

Within the canon, you'd have to rate it above the dire A Momentary Lapse of Reason and probably the two boring and pointless live albums Pulse and Delicate Sound of Thunder, but below everything else.

Not so much a farewell, then, as the last faint pulse of a long-dead star.

The model's name was Zelda Plum... I always wondered she was chosen because of her name.

The Sylv, on original 1987 vinyl, backed up by the cream of British jazzers, and containing perhaps his lovliest song, "Let the Happiness In".
