Brilliant album - one of my all time favourites and a real system tester for sibilance and bass.

One of my wish list items is for MoFi or equivalent to re-issue.

Some Seal to begin the evening's listening.  This is his excellent second album. There's a lot of multi-layering and complexity in Seal's early albums, which is a treat for the ears when the system is good enough to reveal it.

Franz Schubert:  Jean-Claude Pennetier, Klavier

Piano Sonata in G major, Opus 78, D 894

Piano Sonata in A major, D 959

In preparation for the David Fray Schubert disc around the corner so warming up with probably one of the slowest version I know of the D 894 (and one of my favourites which will increase in number next week!!).  Certainly not a recommendation to many given the 48 minutes length here.  There is no middle ground on opinion here as you will either somehow get it or be turned off.  It works for me and gives me an immense amount of pleasure in return.

It is, as you say Kevin, superb. However, it's about as avant-garde as my rear end. Euro-electro yes, and nowt wrong with that.

No, you are right Gary, it's not avant-garde. The subtitle "A Voyage Across French Cosmic & Electronic Avant Garde" is a bit misleading, especially as it's not that cosmic either...

First play for the vinyl companion disc. I do especially love the alternate take of "In The Light"...

This is one of my most anticipated discs this month.  I ordered this March 1st and will have to wait another 1-2 weeks for this and I'm going crazy in the mean time.  Franz Schubert is among the top composers of all time and the music here leaves me speechless.  There are no words for the music that resonates in your blood.

Everything I have seen and heard David Fray has all been on a Hamburg Steinway.  When I get the recording I should be able to confirm.  The Hamburg Steinway Model D in this video is the exact piano of my dreams and hope one day it could drop from heaven in a miracle before time is up so I could live with this instrument until the end.  A romance on three legs you could say is my only dream now.

Before you say I am crazy I can honestly say that a relationship with an instrument is the most pure relationship I could imagine.  The more you put in the more you receive in return.  The kind with two legs though more often than not will take the unsuspecting soul for a ride and stick their gold digging shovel right through your heart in the end.  I speak from experience.  Had I not made one fatal decision in my life I would have had this Hamburg Steinway today and a hope of a future.  But even if I end up living under a bridge and everything else is lost, no one can ever take the music away from ones heart. This is why music is sacred to me.

OK, while there's so much love for Ms Baker, I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon as well.

Original vinyl. And signed by Anita as well... I haven't played this in 20 years I reckon...

An excellent album IMHO, I use my Nautilus half speed vinyl as my benchmark for testing turntable based systems.

A long-time favourite album of mine.  This deluxe CD version is a good reproduction which presents the  simplicity of Free so well. You can just imagine them turning up in the local pub and playing the songs just like they are on this album. Lovely stuff.

What a stunning debut album this was. Blew me away when I first heard it.  Dark, brutal power. Have been a Sabbath fan ever since.

Of of my top three albums behind Freak Out and Over-Nite Sensation. I  do have the first Uk pressing but Zappa did a fantastic job with the 87 CD remix of the album with added stuff missing from the original album and sometime I wonder which one is best.( !!!). Really worth a listen if you haven't yet, Steve.

Can you play Piano?

Yes, I play the piano.  It is my number one greatest joy since around 4 years old.

Absolutely, there is a difference between New York and Hamburg Steinways.  You can tell the difference by simply looking, hearing, and playing.  Two different cultures between USA and Germany.

Every New York Steinway dealer that I have ever met tell me the same story - that they are the same.  I do not think a Hamburg Steinway dealer would tell you they are the same.  The New York dealers are just trying to protect there market.

They use different action and hammers just for starters and this is just the start.  The workmanship on a Hamburg Steinway is perfection while the New York piano in places that you don't normally see it looks like someone built it with an ax.  The New York Steinway attitude is "who looks under a piano anyway". If you take a German Steinway apart you will likely see hidden pieces that are finished properly.

Because the hammers are made under a different philosophy (hot press vs cold press) the touch and sound is different though they still share quite a few family traits.

In the end you can have great New York Steinway and bad ones and you can have great Hamburg Steinways and bad ones.  It is very hard to find great instruments being just an average joe.  The best instruments are the reserve of the rich and famous.
