Another Russian pianist Lazar Berman seems to be rarely talked these days but this is an excellent Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.3 done live in 1976 with Abbado/London Symphony.
Berman’s piano is crystal clear but has a nice intimate self dialog like feel which balances well with bravura passages avoiding to become just a shallow showcase piece. ( which most of Rachmaninoff piano pieces tend to end up being ) Berman's technical skill is impressive. He has a Richter like precision and coolness and Horowitz' showmanship. Abbado’s direction creates ebb and flow effect moving at all times never stay static. Presentation is beautiful digging out more textures and colours out of the score rather than becoming a mere backdrop to the soloist.
Getting into a Russian mood with an American pianists. The rest of the ensemble as well as the recording's location are Russian.

Darling I said what' s for tea?

More music, more music

Let it rock!

Spanish pianist Rafael Orozco and Edo de Waart Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto.
De Waart's direction is cool but not cold. Sensitive yet dramatic. Previn school of flavour ( or lack of ) with a steady flow throughout. It’s got that grandeur Edwardian decadance. Orozco's Lacking a star stopping power of Horowitz or Berman but he makes it up by taking the tune down to be like an intimate personal communication.
Haim,
I have Janis' 2nd (Dorati ) but don't have his 1st or 3rd. If his 2nd is any indication, I bet the others are excellent playing as well?

Ahmad Jamal is a terrific player. I was fortunate to see him at the 1992 Mount Hood Jazz Festival. If you don't mind a couple suggestions I have enjoyed:

on the left: Ahmad Jamal "Digital Works" wonderful selection of songs, one of the first ever cd I purchased back in the mid-80s so a slight digital edge or hardness to the crystal clear recording but excellent playing and a great listen.,
on the right: Ahmad Jamal "Rossiter Road" from about 1990, to me has a slightly "smooth jazz" tone to it but the selection I go back to most often if I feel like listening to AJ.

Hi Jeff,
thanks for for the tips I will put them on my wish list. I as well saw him life at North Sea Jazz two years ago. It was a very interesting concert.
cheers,
bert
Very interesting recording, part of the Vaticum album.

Can someone advise me about posting an image, please? (Not sure where best to post this!) As far as I can see I am following the instructions in the FAQs but I am only getting a blue ? in a small box. I tried recently with sharing an image from Wikipedia and now I have an image uploaded onto Flickr. I have tried the url from the top of the Flickr page, and the three possible sharing modes from Flickr: embed, HTML and BBCode. I am using the Insert/edit image tool at the top of this reply box. It's very frustrating because I have posted images in the past. I am using an up-to-date version of Safari.
Thanks
Clive
You have to copy an image url and paste into the Insert/Edit image icon in the Image url line you find near the smiling small face on command line. Sometimes some urls do not work but this happens to everyone.
The first album of the guys. Less modern then the later albums. But already a very recognizable and different style. The last albums tended to go in a sometimes extreme direction. I like this album as it connects very much to old traditions but is still showing a window to something new, great interplay as well.

Taking a break from heavy Rachmaninoff program.
A live concert from 1976.
I don't get Jarrett's 'stream of 'consiousness' bits but nice as a background music. 3 encore tunes are more conventional with rhythms and followable melody line. But in a long term, I can't deal with the music like this at all.
This original US promo ECM vinyl, however, sounds good ( like a hifi demo disc ).

A well recorded and beautiful Album.

The HTML address/URL has to end with .jpg or .png or similar image format file extension.
A real blast from the past collection of songs from the radio show. Recording quality is lacking in bass somewhat but the energy of the performers still shines through.
A phenomenal 4LP set.

Down tempo acid jazz for background music.
3 LP set from the 90s.

Thanks for the advice but I'm still failing in this - not sure why it worked a few weeks ago but not now....

Jestofunk: Seventy Miles From Philadelphia
Acid Jazz/Deep House from Italy.
Pity that I have a feeling this is a redbook digital file they put on the vinyl with a serious T&A EQ.

Hopefully this might work for you. From an earlier post:
*****I may be able to help on a Mac - find the album cover at amazon or wherever, with the cursor on the cover, control/click (same time)and you will get a drop down, scroll toward bottom and choose copy image address.
come to the thread and click post replay, click the icon to the left of the smiley, paste (command key/"v" key same time) the image address into the top URL line, click in the preview window and the image should appear. Click "insert" and the image should show in the reply window, add any remarks and click Submit Reply.*****
I have used Wikipedia many times, what album are you attempting ?

Jobim: Stone Flower 1970 Release.
Suave production with strings.
I am still unable to locate the original pressing as this reissue is plagued with pressing defects. ( 2010 CTI reissue )

Vertigo Swirl vinyl.
An excellent album. Indeed a classic
17 again! A time when album covers meant almost as much as the insides, and this was quite special in both regards.
With the resurgence in vinyl sales, hopefully album art will once again enjoy the creative excellence of those times. Maybe we should start a thread of favourite album covers?

Mapledurham Watermill, Oxfordshire
Worth a pilgrimage with suitably Sabbath loaded Ipod.

Honky Château: 1972 release.
Elton John before he turned into a light pop singer.
I find that there are a lot more interesting thing going on musically in his pre '75 releases.

I think Tumbleweed Connection by far is the strongest Elton John album.
Released in 1970 this will make his second album. He was only 23!
US UNI pressing sounds great.
It contains my all time favourite 'Burn down the Mission'.

That's why I don't have this album, while I have almost all.
It's going to Good Will.
Intense and good modern jazz album.

A good habit - gentle classical piano for breakfast, Allicia is a very good treat...

Didn't know that drystone. Have made a note of it.
