Ronny Jordan: A Brighter Day
2000 Blue Note release.
In a vein of Grant Green-ish smooth jazz but not as good.
Certainly a standard has fallen from Lion/Wolff days. Just about the only similarity would be that they both died young.
One fast question: what is this 4D sound? Just curious.
bicela,
4D audio recording is just a marketing term DG came up with for their digital recording process in early 90s.
They claim that with A/D conversion as close to the microphone as possible, to minimise the noise ( by avoiding a long cable run for file transfer )
They have developed a *mobile* digital recording unit ( remote controlled mic. preamp ) which it can be installed in a close location to to the recording subject.
Here's more from the CD booklet.
In spite all this, the bottom line is that I don't much care for DG's early digital recording regardless of what they claim. They sound stark and stripped of instrumental colours. Plus they often exhibit higher distortions at high SPL.
This Boulez/Cleveland recording isn't that great but decent compared to other 4D DG CD form the similar era. Dynamic ceiling is lowish and strings and brass get thin as usual DG’s early digital but listeanble so long as at a lowish level. Pretty good instrument separation. Winds and massed strings lose textures at tutti, tho.
Oddly his Mahler's 5th with Vienna Phil sounds better. ( '96 recording and different venue, different recording engineer, same balance engineer )
His recording with CSO also sounds stark to my ears.

Thanks for putting this onto words and the description of some specifics of the DG sound. I have always had a final level of suspicion that at high volume levels my system still had something to improve on specifically with classical .........
First run, first impressions - good...
I don't usually rate cover albums, but this is an excellent exception

I have been very much enjoying working my way through this hybrid SACD box set over the past few days and have put it in my virtual trolley.
I'd not seen LiveFromDarylsHouse for a while and found this episode with Grace Potter.
A new singer to my ears, glad I found her...
She is fabulous looking and is a great singer.
Denis you should dig out the Billy Gibbons and Joe Walsh sets as they almost burn Daryl's House down.
Thanks Ewen, I'll definitely check out the Billy & Joe episodes. Reading some of the YouTube comments, they thought Grace's tunes sounded better with Daryl's house band (who are amazing musicians).
I think Daryl's ability to interpret both his guests tunes as well as his own would make fantastic recordings. What do you think?
From the Masterworks box; the original album plus 11 bonus cuts. Perfect opening to a musical day.
On CD:-

Yep I am of the same opinion re his interpretations.
Have a look at the Todd Rungren show he shot at Todd's house in Hawaii especially I Saw the Light. (Todd's homage to Motown).
Full of those lovely latin rythms ...
Ewen,
I've seen the Todd Rungren show he shot at Todd's house in Hawaii especially I Saw the Light. (Todd's homage to Motown). In fact I spoke to Daryl's wife (Amanda Aspinall) about the Hawaii show when we were watching Allen Stone at the Jazz Café, Camden. Allen is one of my favourite guests on lfdh and his 'live' band are as tight as Steely Dan. Fantastic energy and unbelievable power enjoyed by his YOUNG audience. I've seen him twice and so pleased to see the 'kid's' appreciate someone who doesn't need 'autotune'.

Big Big Train ~ English Electric: Full Power (2013)
Just finished listening to CD2 again. This really is a good (modern) prog' album with shades of Canterbury set, Genesis (vocals), Marillion and more. A very listenable well produced double album. Bandcamp.
Andras Schiff is currently recording Beethoven and Schubert on a fortepiano; but in 2012, for Bach's 48 he used a Steinway. A highlight among Bach recordings on the piano, and ECM's recording is very good (available in hires).

Just listened to the half-speed version of this. I am sure that if I'd ever experimented with drugs this is what it would have sounded like!
...Although 'Swastika Girls' at half-speed is not that far removed from a lot of King Crimson material.
Very enjoyable

Yes, but don't ever try this one. You might need a lobotomy afterwards, I heard!

Peter Gabriel ~ So (1986)
This really is such a well produced good sounding redbook album even before you get into the Hi-Res B&W 'upgrades' for it. This one is redbook from 2012 which includes some remastering of two tracks.
