bicela,

4D audio recording is just a marketing term DG came up with for their digital recording process in early 90s.

They claim that with A/D conversion as close to the microphone as possible, to minimise the noise ( by avoiding a long cable run for file transfer )

They have developed a *mobile* digital recording unit ( remote controlled mic. preamp ) which it can be installed in a close location to to the recording subject.

...

In spite all this, the bottom line is that I don't much care for DG's early digital recording regardless of what they claim. They sound stark and stripped of instrumental colours. Plus they often exhibit higher distortions at high SPL.

This Boulez/Cleveland recording isn't that great but decent compared to other 4D DG CD form the similar era. Dynamic ceiling is lowish and strings and brass get thin as usual DG’s early digital but listeanble so long as at a lowish level. Pretty good instrument separation. Winds and massed strings lose textures at tutti, tho.

Oddly his Mahler's 5th with Vienna Phil sounds better. ( '96 recording and different venue, different recording engineer, same balance engineer )

His recording with CSO also sounds stark to my ears.

Thank you Kuma, very kindly from you. From my limited experience I can confirm that DG made disaster recording at certain formal time considering the quasi-unlimited budget they had. What's pity is such executions can't be repeated. Ciao Maurizio

Yes, but don't ever try this one. You might need a lobotomy afterwards, I heard!

Still think to this day that Metal Machine Music was one of THE worst albums ever made.

Allen is one of my favourite guests on lfdh and his 'live' band are as tight as Steely Dan. Fantastic energy and unbelievable power enjoyed by his YOUNG audience. I've seen him twice and so pleased to see the 'kid's' appreciate someone who doesn't need 'autotune'.

I was very lucky to see Hall and Oates in the mid 70's and it was one of my Top Ten gigs of all time. I was actually standing on the steps of the theatre before the show began giving free tickets away to any lucky soul I wished to. If I was honest it was usually to the prettiest girls and the after gig bash was quite memorable to.

I was exteremely lucky to see a lot of bands in my time and I was think of their show as being the best paced musical wise I have ever seen.

Metallica ~ S&M (1999)

I have always liked this double CD and DVD of them live with the San Fransisco Symphony, they bring a lot to the party and its been my preferred Metallica listening for years now.

MMM was surely just a throwaway. An artistic statement, perhaps, but unlistenable and with no musical merit whatsoever. The number of people who have listened to it all the way through could probably be counted on one hand.

I remember sticking it dump bins within a week or so of buying copies in to sell.

With so many other members on here buying and playing Sinatra, I couldn't resist taking a small risk (it's cheap) on this Masterworks box set, despite not really being a Sinatra fan.

Set arrived yesterday and first play of disc 1 - Swing Easy! + Songs For Young Lovers - this evening.  Goodness me, the reproduction quality is much better than I expected, Sinatra's distinctive voice has wonderful presence, and the supporting band music is delightfully detailed.  Think I going to enjoy dipping into this from time to time.  £16 well spent.

A lot of competition for these pieces, but this is one of the better ones in my eyes...

The Chris Anderson Trio: My Romance & Inverted Image

Originally two LPs recorded in Chicago (1960) and NY (1961), first released only in Japan, now on a Fresh Sound Records CD.

Chris Anderson (1926-2008), entirely self-taught, unfazed by blindness and a brittle bone disease, showed from the start his mastery in harmony and sensitivity. Highly recommended.

Van Morrison. Moondance (1970). On WB Burbank label 1977 reissue. This is one I always keep an eye out for when digging through used vinyl, hoping to come across an original pressing.
