Bis has completed its newest all-Scandinavian Nielsen symphony cycle in style, with great performances of the second and the sixth, one of Nielsen's weirdest but still accessible works. Oramo directs focused and precise performances, expansive when they need to be, but certainly not letting go like Bernstein could. For me, this is exactly what these works need - with exception of the sixth, these symphonies are almost at the level of Sibelius but easily suffer if the reigns aren't kept tight. Sound is exemplary.

Stevie Ray Vaughan ~ Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble (2004)

After Buddy Guy, another extremely fine guitarist. Side 1 of 2 for now.

Horowitz has this ‘take it or leave it’ attitude.  Showmanship Horowitz is ever so present.

The longish Largo drags a bit and feels over laboured. It feels that all that theatrical decorations are getting away of digging the tune deeper.

Hi Kuma, I will search for listening, thank you, very appealing for me!

Forgotten all about them as I haven't heard this album since the early 70's. Well worth a listen for those into funk rock ala Sly Stone.

How is the SQ, needledrop?

Band of Ruhks

Had this for almost a month and half so thought it was about time I played it.  They were all members of The Lonesome River band.

I know what you mean, ewemon. I've got a couple of her other albums, bought after this one, and they leave me a rather underwhelmed.  Perhaps she's just excelled on this album.

It's not bad. I mean not like Hartman's (i.e.) cds but i think is very close to a good recording considering the age. Prophet is fantastic!

I really wanted to listen to this one. I'll left it on the floor for a couple of weeks.

I love this album, at least some of the first numbers especially the 1st number, the other albums are not on the same level I think.

How is this, Bert? I saw/heard Gergiev in Rotterdam a few years ago with Mahler's first, and he made a stop-and-go mess of it. Not typical of the man, I should add - many great performances during his tenure as the chief here.

Hi EJ,

i rather her like this one, while I am having a difficult time to compare (f.i with my Riccardo Chailly or any of the others....., as the piece is not every day on my playlist), obviously as I have the whole bunch - the performance quality will differ. By the way quite good deal on hcracks for the whole package 39 euros while I missed out on the additional 20 percent discount.

cheers,
