I can't yet make my mind up about this album.

I know how you feel Steve. It leaves you with a feeling of wanting more. Levin's bass through out the album makes it worth a listen alone and theres always the mesmerising Starless. Dim the lights, close your eyes and enjoy it.

Truls Mork and Vasily Petrenko give us a beautiful, polished, subtle and careful rendering of the first concerto (haven't listened to the 2nd yet). And I'm sorry, but also boring. These guys can't be accused of missing the point so this approach must have been intentional.

How different from Isserlis' newest recording for Hyperion. Sharp, persuasive, raw, and full of energy:

Cheers,

EJ

Thanks, I have high hopes on this – the previous one was a slight disappointment.

You are probably right Tony. I have left it in the playlist and will have another go at it one evening...

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Matthäus Passion

Peter Pears, Hermann Prey, Elly Ameling, Marga Höffgen, Fritz Wunderlich, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, Karl Münchinger

Recorded in 1964 at the Ludwigsburg Church of Schloss in Stuttgart

A full and satisfying morning with the Matthäus Passion earlier.  It is draining and a rather taxing to listen so intently for 3 hours including the optional self-flagellation.

Simply beautiful and hard to imagine how one man could create so many master works.

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Zhu Xiao-Mei (Klavier)

Die Kunst der Fuge, BWV 1080

In preparation for my vinyl copy which should be in hand in about two weeks or so.

Old but fun. The title track, Radio and Not Fade Away are the stand out songs on this album for me.

During my workout. At the beginning it sounds much like a wall of sound - later on that improves...

This is a great album - a sort of world / electronic hybrid. There is a very wide range of sounds and rhythms, very engrossing.
