Non switched to my usual classicalIano treat during breakfast. A great habit and a great album as well...
Dudamel/Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela
A live recording from 2012 but finally released last year.
Right off the bat, I am pretty disappointed with the sound quality. This is like going back to DG's 90s barren digital recording era. Actually this is worse than Boulez set or even the ancient Klemperer/Philharmonia's EMI '68 recording!
Cast of thousand, Dudamel takes a colourful soundtrack spacious approach. But I wish it had more of rhythmic pulse ( like Boulez set ) as the music sounds a tad lazy at times. Scherzo signals straight away its mischievous but sinister intent but leading edge isn’t crisp lacking tension. The final movement opens up a horizon and is like a large ship sailing into a big ocean. Dudamel seems to be more comfortable showy pageantry movements than more interesting inner-movements probably due to his weak organisation skills. My mind starts wondering before each movement ends whereas Boulez or Klemperer would keep me engaged at all time.
I found that Mahler's music really need someone who can lead and show a solid structure and direction otherwise they can quickly turn into a boring overwrought affair.
Like this one.
the durutti column - circuses and bread. It seemed to chime with the start of the General Election period.

Within Temptation ~ Black Symphony (2008)
I came across this band while trying to find similar bands to Evanescence and We areThe Fallen. They are more of a symphonic/goth rock than the other two but really enjoyable nonetheless. Fronted vocally by the very talented Sharon Den Adel, I have enjoyed all their albums to date and this one live in Rotterdam is no exception.

I have 'The Unforgiving' and enjoyed that. Guess I need to look at some of their others
Within Temptation and Evanescence are good fun... in small doses for me though
See also Laibach!
