Within Temptation ~ Black Symphony (2008)

I came across this band while trying to find similar bands to Evanescence and We areThe Fallen. They are more of a symphonic/goth rock than the other two but really enjoyable nonetheless. Fronted vocally by the very talented Sharon Den Adel, I have enjoyed all their albums to date and this one live in Rotterdam is no exception.

Hi Steve

I have 'The Unforgiving' and enjoyed that. Guess I need to look at some of their others

Great band, all their albums are worth a listen

also check out Delain, Leaves Eyes, Issa, Nightwish, Edenbridge, Lacuna Coil, Xandria, Katra, to name a few....

ameden thanks for your leads to the other (similar) bands. I have a few Nightwish albums that I enjoy so I will have to try some of the others you mention.

Hi Howard -

I'm a big fan of GB, and have seen him live a couple of dozen times.  Always a great show - he is a master singer, player and story teller.  My favorite albums of his are more folksy - One More Goodnight Kiss, In The Dark With You, and Poet Game, but I really do like them all.  Covenant and Slant 6 Mind are darker, more bluesy.

He's a prolific writer, and his songs have been covered by many other artists. There's a lovely, all-female tribute album called Going Driftless that's also worth a listen.

Hook

Like you Hook big fan of Greg. Did you know that there are 2 versions of Covenant out there? I also have some official Live show cd's that were extremely ltd and some boots. One artist I would like to see live.

I did not know that about Covenant, but will look for the alternative version. Thanks Ewemon!

The first time we saw GB was a solo gig in a small bar called the Brokedown Palace in Wasburn, Wisconsin, in 1985. There was only about 25 people in the place, and it was right before the release of In The Dark With You. Mrs. Hook was enchanted, walked up to him after the first set, and started chatting. He then came over to our table, and we and another couple had a nice conversation with him. A really nice guy, he always said hello and gave us a minute of small talk at the gigs (with Bo Ramsey) that followed.

Unfortunately, time and cigarettes have not been kind to his voice. A GB show today is a very different experience than ten or twenty years ago. But the real treat, as you can hear in his live recordings is the impromptu work - the alternative lyrics, the long, winding stories, the jokes, the skatting, and so on. I hope you do get a chance to see him soon!

"The Unforgiving" is a good album Russell, you could also try "The Heart of Everything" available S/H via a well known reseller at the moment for £1, or you can get a twin album pack of both "Mother Earth and Silent Force" for £4.90.

You can follow some great clips of them with the Metropole Orchestra, perhaps starting here on you tube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcFwR-J7Rq8

Thanks Steve

Requires some getting used to it, different pitch, different strings...., makes it raw and intense - great experience...

My very first listen to this album, obviously a bit too much for 12 year old me. More of a Shoot! than NME kid I was.

Shostakovich dedicated this 8th Symphony to Mravinsky.

This is a pitch corrected 1982 recording. Apparently, original Philips release was at a wrong speed.

From the first movement the story is thick and brooding with massed strings resembling screaming of people. Grotesque and relentless one is throwing into a middle of turmoil and it just does not light up.

Unlike teh 7th, there is no hero or triumphant victory at the end making this score extremely dark and heavy to sit through. Largo is opressive and keeps it in minor keys for the most part then at the back end there is a bit of change and shows a slight optimism. The final movement sounds like everyone is playing wrong notes in off key. Feeling like witnessing an execution in a stormy day.

Apparently, it was not hit and Soviet government banned this score for 8 years after its premier in 1943. ( I'd guess that Stalin's death probably let the score see the light of day again )
