In a Silvestrov mood:

I was surprised to find this Szell + Cleveland Symphony's recording as I don't normally associate him with Bruckner.

This is a '76 reissue of 2 record set. They put each movement on one side of record so second LP which contains 3rd and 4th movement ( 29 min. & 22 min respectively ) has hardly no deadwax left!

I put this record on expecting not liking at all but from the start, full of suspense and struck by how clear the vista.

A bit more nimble in a sense that I don’t get the feel of gigantic presence of something or someone but more in keeping with intimate and personal story unfolding albeit Szell never lets the raw emotions out in open like warts and all.

It has a Mozart like lucidity. Layering of instruments close and afar create a 3D landscape with finelined details and textures. Sophisticated and polished presentation. As Klemperer, every stone is unturned. Szell’s insect’s like fussiness somehow working for Bruckner’s OCD like tendencies.

Scherzo is a bit like a chamber orchestra. Rhythmic and there is a constant flow of forward motion with various instruments appearing from all around he builds a solid case of story telling. Even the part of Scherzo gets a bit jazzy. Out of this world Adagio feels heavenly where everything is so still and feeling of contentment and comfort. Impeccably well organised, everything is crystal clear. Perhaps lacking a bit of audacity and balls in the final movement but Szell opens up the whole scene with a clear blue sky. 8th’s finale isn’t interesting as his relatively unaltered 9th but skillful use of strings throughout is quite effective for creating the right mood.

Colour me impressed. If only Muti/CSO can do this...

Marillion, Clutching at Straws, my wife's first choice for tonight, and a fine one too.  Flac streamed via Hugo

If mid-80s Dire Straits and Don Henley mated and had an indie-rock baby, this would be it. Highly recommended.

Still like Marillion very much - all with Fish and the first recordings without him.

Near the end of Mick Walls biography on the Doors, This album's the go to, track 3 and we get a bl**dy 3.7 quake. I jumped but the lyra didn't, glad I set it close to max 1.95. Always fun in the shaky isles

Both played on my computer system as my main one has been broken down as I had to clean the carpets and it looks like she who must be obeyed is wanting me to paint the room.

Enjoying this '95 remaster with coffee and the last hot cross bun (toasted of course) before heading to the golf course.

Matt,

Per your post I'm now listening to the 'Highlights' version "18 Tracks". A great collection and the HDCD mastering sounds great on a 5x. Maybe time I step up and get the full box set?

You forgot Ultravox, Big Country, A Flock of a seagulls.......some The Notwist........ I had the same feeling: something from the 80s.

Koops' alternate takes.

My fave is live recording of Carmen Lundy's "Never Gonna Let You Go" sung by waif like Yukimi Nagano. Perfect for a breezy jazzy arrangement.

This 1996 Studio !K7's original pressing sounds pretty good.

Wish I had their *K&D Sessions* on vinyl, tho!

It just has been reissued as x5 LPs. Remastered by Bernie Grundman.

I hadn't heard this version before. It's quite different from what I have heard before. I like it a lot so far, it's more lyrical than usual..
