Great set and I like the SQ too.

Vinyl

The guitar solo at the beginning of "Power to Love" is Hendrix at his best.

A three-CD set, with separate volumes focusing on original works, classic jazz, and, finally, songs by Cole Porter. Solo piano, highly recommended.

Steve,

Thanks for posting. I wasn't aware of this one. All my SD is on vinyl, but this would play well in my shop. Planning to order the set. Cheers!

Gieseking's Debussy might be old fashioned but I love the world he paints. It's like going back in time.

If you are buying second hand then look out for this long box set as they called it. Its well presented. If you are able to find any new then they will be in the more recent and more usual square box set. I can't say if there is any difference in the SQ between them but the Long box sound is good. They are good value over your side of the pond at about $20 at a certain reseller, I think that I paid about £30 for it new back in '98 or so. Happy hunting.

This is the set list:

The definitive recordings of this music. Currently a discounted release at Hyperion's website - if you'd like to dip your toe in some really good, challenging but accessible modern classical music, don't hesitate and grab it while the price is low!

Magenta ~ The Lizard King (2013)

A stunning EP from this band. Very much prog rock in the style of the 70s and 80s with a sound of this reminiscent of Yes but with a superb female vocalist Christina. I will surely be looking at getting more of their back catalogue.

Double-CD reissue (with added singles, B-sides and Peel sessions) of this classic album of 1982, the best of its year IMO:

Freshly downloaded so having my first listen, early impressions are that this is excellent.

The original Tallahatchie bridge which collapsed in 1972, is seen in this clip. At 2:57 we see a missing handrail (suggesting that Billie Joe jumped off at that point) and at 4:00 we see beautiful Bobby strolling over the bridge. At the end we see white flowers floating on the muddy river (which she picked from Choctaw Ridge a year after the supposed event).

Very moving, especially in her local Southern accent. A landmark song!

Another brilliant version from 1971 (listen at 3:30 - Mama said to me "Child? What happened to your appetite") :

Amazing song, thrilling story....

And listen to the song Morning Glory, starting at 4:00 in this clip.... What an incredible singer!

As encore we see a young Donovan in another moving song, finishing off in a very cheerful duet

Bert, I worship Bobbie Gentry. She is a goddess. As well as being a brilliant singer, she was an ace songwriter, storyteller, lyricist and (sometimes) producer/arranger. The fact that she retired in the 1970s and has been completely invisible these past 40 years makes her even better.

She made three LPs which are for me stone-cold masterpieces:

Touch 'Em With Love

Fancy

and The Delta Sweete

If you haven't heard these albums, I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Thanks Kevin that's a great shout I will have to go and try out further an artist who apart from the obvious hits, passed me by at the time.
