A piano dialogue between Baroque and contemporary works.

Posted on: 18 April 2015 by Florestan

César Franck: Alice Ader (piano), Ensemble Ader (Isabelle Veyrier (Cello), Christophe Poiget (Violin), Pascal Robault (Viola), Christophe Ladrette (Violin))

Prelude, Fugue & Variation op. 18

Prelude, Choral & Fuge

Piano Quintett in F minor

Building my war chest up with Franck recordings and in particular my focus has been on the piano quintet.  The first movement especially has taken control of me.  A wonderfully gripping bit of music making in a French style reminiscent of the late nineteenth century when music still mattered.

This is a new acquisition; an album I was unaware of until yesterday. Completely improvised, and very good too.

Today's needle drops and listening:

I have this as a 24-192 set of files I ripped from my DVD-A ...be interested to do the comparison a bit later - just uploaded the files.

There was another album, but I have deleted it ....Olivia Newton John. I had some friends who worked at EMI and so I got tranches of LPs given to me, and this MUST have been one ....oh dear. No redeeming music, even the covers were poor.

A few weeks ago I tried ripping a couple of Captain and Tennille albums. I thought these were interesting as they are pure Musak but there was some excellent musicianship, didn't save them ....just no point in keeping digital files of music that will NEVER get played.

The trouble with searching for the young soul rebels is that you just can't find them anywhere.

Tori Amos, Under The Pink, mainly because Mrs DayJay insisted, but this is a stunningly good version of this album.  24 bit flac streamed via Hugo

Melissa Manchester: Hey Ricky 1982 release.

Very 80s sound and dated ( Vangelis cover! ) but this original pressing sounds pretty good.

Recorded at various studios ( and no mention of digital equipment ) around the countries and highly engineered with a fleet of mixing engineers but the mastering was done by George Marino ( he has done many good sounding albums ) at Sterling Sound NY.

Very proof that an 80s record can sound good.

Here's a fun Steely Dan influenced 'Hey Ricky'. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics.
