Byron Janis/Reiner/CSO's Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.1

Recorded at the Orchestra Hall in 1957, very different style and presentation from the Trifonov/Bychkov performance I just saw last week.

Opulent and highly polished.

Dazzling machine gun style technique gives more assurance than Trifonov. 2nd movement however sounds a bit fussy with extra filgreas. This set does not have the flowing quality and rather coming off mechanical and stiff.

Mary Black ~ Circus (19950

Someone I don't listen to much, but perhaps should.

This album is a CD from '94 and its reproduction quality is excellent.  The live rendition of Hotel California is lovely.

Your experiences mirror mine MDS. I will have to find and give this CD a go. Is your CD on the Geffen Records label from '94? Thanks

Interesting music, through band camp, difficult to qualify. Jazz, progressive, chamber jazz progressive....whatever it's worth while to listen to this....

Julie FowlisGach Sgeul / Every Story (2014)

Such an exquisite voice.

'Gach Sgeul / Every Story' is another extraordinary recording from one of Scotland's brightest jewels.

- The BBC

You can get a sense of her music here in this beautifully filmed clip of her song To Calum / Dho Calum from this album

Hungry Lucy ~ Before We Stand We Crawl (2006)

Just 24 minutes long this is the lovely 4th album by this duo. I found both them and Bandcamp through this forum a year or so ago.

Mary Black ~ The Holy Ground (1993)

Because I am enjoying female vocals today and have not listened to this album in a  number of years. The final track Poison Words is beautifully sung and very special.

London Grammar ~ If You Wait (2013)

One of the best releases of 2013 from this young band.

I've said this before, but Ashkenazy seems to still grow as musician, and old age seems hardly - if at all - to have slowed him down. In these works, some of Scriabin's best works, he is a sure guide, even in the smallest works hinting that the notes themselves only barely touch the surface of the music and story between and beneath them. The recorded sound is close, warm, luxurious and very realistic. Candidate for recording of the year, for me.

Been listening to music all evening and I can think of no better way to spend the evening after an exhausting day at work. Two last albums of today:

Trichotomy's "Fact Finding Mission"me hitch is a really good album from Naimlabel. This is playfull Jazz at its best.

....and finally Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Abattoir Blues" because I haven't played their music for a while - and it's a good album.
