Hopkinson Smith ~ Bach:Sonatas and Partitas Suites (2014)

Playing CD 1 of 4

"Recorded between 1980 and 2012 this 4-CD set from Naive gathers up Hopkinson Smith's Bach recordings for the label. Gramophone declared the Sonatas and Partitas 'the best recording of these works on any instrument.' 'for anyone knowing these suites well, this version will prove totally riveting - I haven't listened more intently for a long time...Smith's playing is profoundly sensitive.' BBC Music Magazine, September 2013 ... 'Smith has great dignity and poise. Dignity is an especially good word for his noble but restrained way with the emotion of the Second Suite' MusicWeb International, 2nd July 2013"

A jazz trio playing together with another ensemble - leading to an interesting mix of chamber jazz with a tendency of classical music

Before a good jazz ensemble

Now listening to this. It's difficult to describe. But I would say it's modern accessible classical music.

Modern cello music, almost poppy

Milt Jackson "Sunflower"

released on Creed Taylor's CTI Records label, this style is the precursor to what is known as "smooth jazz".  Typical label lineup includes Milt, Freddie Hubbard, Billy Cobham, Ron Carter, etc.

The new Mahler 9 recording by the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer conducting.

A recording that makes your hairs in your neck stand up. The dynamics are crazy, the clearity breathtaking and the orchestra is giving a performance which resembles the dynamics of what Ricardo Chailly has done with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the tangible emotions of what Leonard Bernstein has done.

I recently heard this same symphony live in Rotterdam with Jaap van Zweden conducting and by mistake I was sitting in the front row. Listening to this recording feels like feeling that raw emotion of the players of the orchestra so up and close, but without the imbalance of sitting in front. A rare experience on a home system. So, if you have this super listening conditions at home and a system to match, this recording will probably blow your socks off.

No, I don't. I bought the high res file and played it on my Naim ND5XS/Nait2 combo.
