Not played any Floyd for a while so thought I'd dig out the discovery version of Meddle.

The first one from The xx

Late night, with a glass of very decent organic Greek red after a shift.

Ravel Piano Concerto: Vannitskaya vs. Grimaud

Vannitskaya/Varga set is much more rhythmically in tune than Grimaud/Zinman performance. Less flashy but there's a plain honesty to her playing. Fun and playful intro against dynamic and expressive orchestration. Good use of Rubato also create tensions and breathing quality.

Interesting thing is that I can hear Vinnitskaya playing Erroll Garner style rag where right hand is slightly lagging behind the steady left hand creating this odd tension and sense of momentum. It is appropriate for this whacky jazz age tune.

She's got a chip on her shoulder attitude like Argerich or Francois but more whimsical.

Great album during my workout. Hope the will make another album together. While I like Steven Wilson's solo work, I like the band more...

Soen ~ Cognitive (2012)

This was Soen's first album and it certainly was a good debut. Martin Lopez ex Opeth on drums, Steve Di Giorgio (a name new to me) on bass guitar and he really drives the music along very well, No growling, "proper" vocals here from Joel Ekelöf who has a voice that suits this, melodic / progressive metal genre very well.
