Joe Satriani ~ Time Machine (1993)

Listening to the second CD which is of Joe playing live and to be honest I prefer it to the studio version on CD1, far more energy and more raw.

On CD:-

Because I am back from The Smoke up in God's Own County, the wife is watching The Chelsea Flower Show and I am rockin' with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers because I have the day off tomorrow.

Is that reason enough?

Reason enough just in getting back from The Smoke.

PS God's own country is further North just over that wee border.

Debussy: Sonatas for flute and harp.

Songs of Bilitis is a quaint little narrative song *poems*. Charming in its own right, sort of like turn of the century beatnik poetry reading.

I love the comfortable sound of flute and harp.

But the piano/Flute duo of The Prelude to the afternoon of a faun failed to create the dreamy atmosphere of orchestra.

The piano ends up sounding like a rehearsal for a ballet instead. It might have been more effective to do it in flute solo.

Messiaen: Turangalila Symphony: Myung-Whun Chung/Orchestre De La Bastille

Kaleidoscope of colours and noise overlayed onto various musical styles.

What we used to call it back in the 70s : 'Far and trippy!'

I would like to know what Messiaen were smoking when he wrote it. :/

It's like trapped in a fun house where there is no straight lines anywhere and things are not quite what they  appear to be.

Palmanana ~ Green (2013)

Palermo Italy is hardly know as being a hot bed of stoner rock but this album has just put it on to that particular genre's musical map.

"Melodic guitar interplay over rhythmic bass runs with near jazz percussions provides an almost ethereal quality. It also has fuzzy guitar driven beats that can compete with any garage stoner outfit around. Sounds like the standard Stoner/Psych fair? Well, the trick with this album is the arrangement. Some songs build to a crescendo where others start big just to fade away like distant thunder. All have a great 'live jamming' feel to them giving a nice twist to the genre." - Harry Harrison

I wouldn't listen - just enjoying the cover...

I have the two earlier albums of her. And I am now listening to this collaboration with Boris Blanc on Qobuz streaming. I have mixed feeling with this album. Some songs are great to me, some are not so great. She stepped away from her earlier style which is recommendable, but sometimes a bit difficult for fans of the earlier work (like me).

On vinyl. A new purchase, first time listen:

A lot of my friends who are Dylan buffs hate it, but I am rather enjoying it thus far.

There's no better way to relax on a grey Friday afternoon than with a bit of Throbbing Gristle. This is the famous (well to TG aficionados, anyway) live album Heathen Earth - the 2014 Chris Carter vinyl remaster. Surprisingly accessible this one, I always think.

Checking the results of my turntable speed fine tuning.

Top notch musicians that can actually play music in time are essential.

Vini Reilly may be one of the world's great guitarists, but he's also one of the planet's worst singers.

Here's his second album, "LC" (Factory FACT 44, 1981), re-released by Factory Benelux as a two-CD set, boosted by demos, outtakes and compilation tracks. Vini sings on a few, but mostly it's instrumental. Thank goodness.
