Dmitri Shostakovich:  Marc-Andre Hamelin, Takacs Quartet

String Quartet No. 2 in A major, Op. 68

Piano Quintet in g minor, Op. 57

Front illustration on the album cover is called Landscape with Five Houses (c 1932) by Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (1878-1935).  What is remarkable to me is how the music of Shostokovich really has a rugged edge to it on the surface as it appears cold and bleak at times yet there is a suppressed sadness and longing for something that looks towards something unreachable.  A remarkable conveyance of the human condition.  In Shostakovich's time it was the Russian machine against non-conformance.  Today, control is much more sophisticated and subtle.  I am not sure who is writing meaningful music that reflects the times as with the great composers of the past?

Takacs Quartet and Marc-Andre Hamelin are both in fine form here with there latest recording.

The light touch and flowing style of Angela Hewitt versus Tharaud's in depth exploration. Two valid approaches producing completely different flavors of Couperin's works.

Some psychedelic sounds for a Sunday afternoon. I recall that I didn't play this much after I bought it. Now I remember why!

Actually I couldn't even get to the end of side one with Planet Gong's Floating Anarchy. Moved onto something a whole world more wholesome:

A beautiful album and a very good, well balaced recording. The bass goes lowwww And the cymbals shimmer with a brassy errr...shimmer.

FLAC stream from NAS on Connect 2Qute.

Sublime.
